Close but no cigar.... Chicago police involved shooting - Nobody injured

A Chicago police officer fired on a gunman who fired shots into a crowd of people in the West Englewood neighborhood on the city's South Side, authorities said this morning.

No one was struck by the gunfire during the brief shootout that occurred in the 7000 block of South Hermitage Avenue just before 10:30 p.m. Tuesday.

An Englewood District officer standing on the block spotted the shooter firing a handgun into a group of people standing nearby, police said.

The shots sent the crowd scattering for cover, though at least one man pulled a handgun and returned fire at the gunman, according to authorities.

The officer fired at the initial gunman and gave chase. Officers at the scene eventually arrested three young men and recovered a weapon.

No charges had been filed as of this morning as Area South detectives continued their investigation, a police spokesman said.
