Witnesses said it was like shooting black ducks in a carnival shooting gallery!Eight people — including a child— were wounded Thursday night in a drive-by shooting in the South Shore neighborhood, officials said.
The shooting occurred about 9:45 p.m. near the intersection of 79th Street and Kingston Avenue, according to police News Affairs Officer Joshua Purkiss, citing preliminary information.
Police could not immediately confirm how many people were shot, but Fire Media Affairs said five people were taken to nearby hospitals.
One child was taken in critical condition to the University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital, Fire Media Affairs.
A person was taken in critical condition to Mount Sinai Hospital, Fire Media Affairs said. Another person was taken in critical condition to Stroger Jr. Hospital. Two adults were taken in serious condition to Advocate Trinity Hospital and Stroger Hospital.
About 10:30 p.m., at least a dozen police cars left the shooting site and sped to 81st and Stony Island. Police with rifles appeared to be surrounding the South Shore Motel.
A source said that the shooter is believed to be resting comfortably in the motel. The suspect’s car also was found nearby.
