1 dead Negro, 3 colored boys arrested in Hobart after home-invasion suspects chased 10 miles
One person is dead and charges are expected against three others after they were followed about 10 miles from a home invasion near Valparaiso to Hobart, Ind., where their vehicle crashed with their pursuer's vehicle this evening, police said.
The person who died suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound near U.S. Route 30 and Colorado Street in Hobart, and the other three were arrested nearby after Lake County, Ind., Sheriff’s officers were called to the area about 5:15 p.m., according to a release from the sheriff’s office.
A Lake County sheriff's spokeswoman and the Lake County coroner’s office said they did not have information on the person who died.
The home invaders -- with one person remaining in the car -- initially approached a woman, age 52, at her home in the 100 block of S-450-W in Porter Township, about 5 p.m., said Porter County Sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Larry LaFlower. The three who went up to the woman's home asked her for directions to the local high school, and acted out of breath and in need of sitting down, and she offered to get them water.
The three then forced their way into the woman's home, kicked and punched her, threatened her at gunpoint, and stole cash and guns from her, LaFlower said.
After the home invasion, a neighbor of the woman's, a Hammond firefighter, followed the men, LaFlower said. The firefighter called police and kept in contact with them as he followed the home invaders into Lake County, LaFlower said.
