Where was this arbitrator for the Chicago police contract? Arbitrator recommends salary hike of 15-20 percent 1st of new contract for teachers

The arbitrator, Edwin Benn, 63, a Glencoe attorney, was given the task of figuring out fair compensation for CPS teachers as they begin working a longer school day next year. - OH WAIT... Edwin Benn??? That was the arbitrator who gave the Chicago cops a 2% raise....

Chicago Public Schools and the teachers union this week are both expected to reject an arbitrator's long-awaited fact-finding report, which recommends a double-digit salary hike that both sides agree could force teacher layoffs and larger class sizes, according to sources close to the negotiations.

The arbitrator is expected to recommend that teacher salaries be increased 15 to 20 percent in the contract's first year, based largely on the longer school day that begins in the fall, sources said. The increase would include hikes for experience and for pursuing graduate degrees, compensation that CPS has tried to eliminate.

The recommended raises would be devastating to a district poised to deplete its cash reserves to close an expected $665 million deficit next school year. The district also faces hundreds of millions of dollars in teacher pension payments that will come due in 2014.

The Chicago Teachers Union had gone into negotiations asking for a wage increase of nearly 30 percent over two years. Sources said the union realizes that the price of a major pay hike in terms of lost jobs and working conditions would be too high.

One Jew, Edwin Benn, in cahoots with fellow Jew Racoon Eyes. These two fuckheads are just playing with everyone's dicks on this one. The Racoon WANTS the teachers to walk. Yes...he WANTS them to take a hike. In his way of thinking the Racoon can play the "Children" card and make the teachers look like the assholes. He knows the police, firemen/women, paramedics can't walk so he can play with us even more. How about a WORK SLOWDOWN? You don't have to walk out to really make this POS look like what he really is. Take twice as much time on jobs. No tickets. If a fellow cop calls for help...run to help THEM. This job the Racoon shits all over is only a stepping stone (in his mind) to bigger and better things. Even if this prick leaves office after four years he can hook up with some big time law firm and open his own "consulting" firm like his mentor Richie Daley has done.

I guess union teachers are more useful and more valued to the city then police offers are.

Not like there is a crime wave happening now or anything of that sort. Who needs cops? No our wonder mayor it would appear!

It is critical the kids become indoctrinated at a young age. That and the need to staff the six year high school programs for blacks and browns. High school normally takes fours years. In the case of students with so called special needs however... Be glad 40% of those graduates can sort of read their diploma, in English, when it is given to them.

Glad the city will never run out of money to fund these excessive budgets. Oh, wait...

Fix the school system first before lengthening the school day. The longer the kids spend in CPS, the dumber they will be come. First fire all teachers and make they interview and test for their jobs back. Pay based on student performance on not base on seniority. Provide school vouchers so parents can choose which schools to send their kids. If kid misbehaves or is failing boot them out.

It's simple. Most teachers voted for Obama. Most cops did not. See----simple!

I once worked for a business that was going broke and we all had to take pay cuts not get raises to keep the business afloat. They in my estimates need to get rid of 25%of the teachers to get a pay raise of this proportion. The city is broke. I smell another city bankruptcy and it could be Chicago.

Benn did a few CPD contracts and plenty of CPD arbitrations

HE WAS OUR ARBITRATOR!!!!!!!!!!

Whats really bad about this arbitrator is that he recommends huge raisers and later in the article it is stated that the teachers do not pay into their pensions. Here we pay 9% into our pensions, they pay nothing and gets big raises. 51% of my tax bill is for the CPS Why are our property taxes funding the schools when ion the suburbs and downstate the state is funding the schools. Change CPS funding from the city to the state and my property tax bill will drop in half The bill passed a year ago Jan regarding new hires included a provision for the city tp pay into our pensions over the next 30 years enough funds to reach 90% funded Rahm complained that would raise property taxes too much Oh so we can pay for the schools and the teachers pension, but cant pay into ours what is owed

If that's true about teachers not paying into their pensions, we need to start raising hell.

I'm am not concerned about teachers pensions, but I am concerned that 99% of them are morons.

Rahm better fire them all and start fresh. I will volunteer to teach for free.

Arbitration is a LAST resort, in some cases you open up the WHOLE CONTRACT AND that would be devastating because some good perks would be open for review by the arbitrator.

I am a CPS teacher and we do pay into our pensions. Don't let the media fool you into thinking anything less. The reason the Chicago Teachers Pension Fund is having so many problems now is because CPS was given "pension holidays" for several years. Now they want to claim broke and say they can't afford it. That's bullshit. CPS employees never missed a payment. It comes right out of our paycheck.

Rahm and his corporate masters want to end public service as a career. They want to privatize all public services and make them jobs that people will work for low pay and shitty benefits.

All public service workers, police, firefighters, teachers, librarians, sanitation etc. need to stand together. We need to say fuck you to Rahm and when the next mayoral election comes around we need to organize around a common candidate that respects us and the work we do.
