Sticking to their guns: Marines place $22.5M order for the Colt .45 M1911

Sanity may be coming back to the military at least in the case of the side arm.

For years the military and the police for that matter have been saddled with the inadequate 9mm as the approach to self defense . Now the Marines have opted to go back to the Colt .45 a proven battlefield weapon and one where if you hit the object of you fire at it will stay down as opposed to the 9mm where it takes multiple shot to lay out an attacker.

The M1911 Colt .45
WASHINGTON D.C. - The Colt .45 M1911 is making a big comeback, now that the U.S. Marines have placed a $22.5 million order for the Connecticut-made pistols.

It’s been called the greatest handgun ever made, and it has barely changed sine 1911, when the legendary John Browning designed it especially for the U.S. Military.
And now, the Colt .45 M1911 is making a big comeback, now that the U.S. Marines have placed a $22.5 million order for the Connecticut-made pistols.
The gun, which has been wielded on film by John Wayne and in real life by Sgt. Alvin York and Maj. Audie Murphy, was the standard-issue sidearm in the military for decades, until it was replaced by the Beretta M9 in 1985.

"It just became an iconic part of military and American history," Gerry Dinkel, CEO and president of Colt Defense, told FoxNews.com.
The gun, one of the most successful pistols ever used at Camp Perry's National Matches, a competition known to be the main world event in artillery sports, has barely changed since it's creation. Dinkel says that shows the gun's "elegant design" just can't be improved on. And firearms experts agree.
"You can’t beat a .45 cartridge," Jack Lewis, firearms director for Cowan's Auctions, told FoxNews.com. "Some things are hard to replace," he said.

Colt Defense, based in Hartford, Conn., will supply as many as 12,000 of the 200,000 U.S. Marines with semi-automatic, tan-colored M45 Close Quarter Battle Pistols, and they will include spare parts and logistical support. The gun has long been the weapon of choice for special operations agents, thanks to its reliability and the stopping power of its massive bullets.
"I'm really glad that they're keeping it in the American economy," Lewis, who used the gun while he was in the armed forces, said. "I was quite upset when they went to the Beretta," Lewis said.
Some reports suggest Marines are not happy with their main Beretta M9s for their lack of accuracy and stopping power. With M1911's now supplying Special Ops, growing interest may lead to a better solution.
"To have the 1911 selected again for U. S. Forces 101 years after its initial introduction is just an incredible testament to the timeless design and effectiveness of the Colt 1911," Dinkel said. "This is truly a gratifying contract award."

Someone dug their head out of their ass and got the USMC a real pistol. How about the rest of the services following this example?9mm"s were made by the Germans WW1 to maime not to kill..45 will put them down if not kill or seriously wound someone.Police should follow this reasoning also. These are lifesavers ETC........

Good choice for a battlefield weapon.

All handguns of common calibers were not meant to be primary weapons to the Military. They are Secondary Weapons. I'd take my Grandpappy's 30-30 Windcheater over the 9mm OR .45 aco Pea-Shooters.

And the reason the 9mm was made to maime and not kill was taking care of the wounded sapped the resources of the the opposing army.

You have to take care of the wounded - the dead can be left where they died if needed,

Colt .45 is the greatest battle/police weapon ever made.

If you need bigger in a single soldier carried weapon then the M1 Garand or the M-14 is the way to go.

The military switched the 9mm not because it was better but cause the envelope was thicker than colts.

Obsolete thinking. Few of our modern enemies give a shit about their own wounded. They are martyrs on a mission. The Muzzies however, do drag off their dead to keep us from accurately assessing the battlefield.

This handgun is legendary indeed. During the Spanish American War, attackers would tie cords around their arms and legs to prevent blood loss when shot while rushing our troops on horseback. The .38 revolvers couldn't stop them. The .45 was designed specifically to KNOCK DOWN the enemy WHEREVER they were hit. The transfer of momentum by the large subsonic bullet is what's called stopping power. The 9mm round is as bad as the .38 in this regard.

Regarding maiming vs. killing, in close quarters (where sidearms are used) a maimed attacker can and will still kill you.

As a Colt aficionado, I love the Colt M1911, but you're going to pay more than $1000 for a Colt Rail Gun. They're a little over $1000. This new pistol is probably a bit more than the standard Rail Gun.

The 9mm was selected because it is and has been the standard NATO pistol round.

And now the Marines should sell all those Beretta M9's to Chicagoland residents to protect themselves from the Mudmen!

You need to read the whole story. This weapon is for the MARSOC forces, as in Force Recon/Marine Corps Special Forces. This is not for the whole Marine Corps better yet the rest of the armed services.

Great weapon choice though, and hopefully it will lead to the rest of the military having a powerful sidearm.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Those are only for marsoc. We've been using older 45s for a while, as was force recon. Every Marine should have one though.

Wino...what say you of this purchase?

Browning Hi-Power with hollowpoints a better choice

The 9mm wasn't developed because it maimed people, the Europeans thought it was quite a magnum in a period where several major powers had .32s as their standard pistol cartridge.

browning is a cheaply made gun and for everyones info the Colt use a chinese made spring SO BROWNING & COLT CAN KISS MY DAN WESSON 1911' s ASS

Carried one when in Vietnam. Nice weapon.

I commented a couple of days ago about the tests for promotion. Someone told me " not to brag and enjoy my inflated pension before I have my grabber"

All I can say is " Thanks"

I'll take my daddy's 30-06 over your Grandpappy's 30-30.

M4 carbine chambered for the 7.62x39mm is perfectly suited for anti mudman work, especially with hollow points. Keep your .223, 30-o6 and your 30-30. If your looking for a nice 1911 for under a grand, check out the new Ruger 1911. If you want a decent 1911 for even less money, Springfield Armory is the way to go. Be mindful that the mud man's cranial bone mass is MUCH more than a white mans. A shot to the forehead may only stun the mudman, aim for the mid face, eye sockets and nasal area. The .45 has lots of energy and mass, but it is of low velocity.

The military went with the 9mm to be more compatible with NATO and the Europeans with common ammo.

But now seeing as NATO and the Europeans ain't doing jack for defense, why should we encumber ourselves with their lame round?

actually the ist weapon of choice before this was developed was the German Luger,it was to be the side arm of all us troops stationed in the philpines at the time and about 3,000 were developed with U S insignia, this gun if still around commands big bucks,

Marine Special Forces? I thought ALL marines were special and elite. Are some more special and elite than others? Next you'll be telling they're taking guys taller than 5'6". They'll be tough to find though since it's now the United States Beaner Corps. Anyone got a Jalisco sticker (with scorpion of course) for the HMMWV window?

Total bunk and scientifically impossible.Newtons third law of physics tell us so.
If the projectile can knock over an opponant then it will knock over the shooter too.

Historically false, the Luger was not out in 1898.US troops never used or adopted the Luger.
Two test lugers in 45acp were submitted for testing for the Army trials. The Colt 1911 won the trials over the other pistols.

I carry a Glock 21 and a Kahr CW45. Both conceal well, if you're careful. Both are classy additions to an urban gunfight. I've always liked the 1911, but never felt really comfortable carrying one after one of our sergeants shot off a chunk of his thigh just below the end of his dick. He was carrying it in his waistband, just to the left of his belt buckle...

Of course, I don't hold mine sideways.
