Thanks the Lord for public aid checks and other freebies!!! So Ron Washington can sit and play chess for two fucking decades on the Chicago lakefront! So nice Ron could show up for chess but not for a job!
For more than two decades Ron Washington was a fixture at the North Avenue Beach chess pavilion. One can do that when you collect welfare your whole life.
He’d wait, coolly and calmly, for opponents to approach on summer days. He’d wear his hustling uniform — a cap, rumpled cotton pants and a dark blue T-shirt.
“I could look [slick],” he said, “but who’s gonna play me that way? Because if you look good, people won’t give you no money. That’s a hustle. You gotta be smart.”
But never again will the 61-year-old subject of a 2006 Chicago Sun-Times feature fill his unofficial spot at the pavilion. Police said he drowned in Lake Michigan on Friday afternoon.
Washington, of the 100 block of West Maple, was pulled from the lake near North Avenue Beach at Burton Place at 1:45 p.m., officials said. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in “very critical” condition and was later pronounced dead.
The Cook County medical examiner’s office ruled it an accident.
