John Hurt, 27, of the 600 block of Wentworth Avenue in Calumet City, was charged last night with one count of first-degree murder and concealment of a homicide, according to Calumet City police Capt. Dan Zorzi. Hurt's bond was set at $1 million by Judge Israel Desierto today in Cook County Bond Court.
Hurt had an "on again off again" dating relationship with the mother of the victim, Jessica M. Tetter, Zorzi said. Assistant State's Attorney Sylvie Manaster said that Hurt was the husband of the victim's mother.
Tetter's mother said her daughter had intervened in an argument between the couple Wednesday morning, Manaster said. When Tetter's mother came home from work that afternoon, Hurt told her the girl had left earlier that day and not returned. Hurt refused to help the mother look for the girl, the mother said, according to Manaster.
The mother noticed, Manaster said, that the daughter hadn't taken money or jewelry when she left and her laptop computer remained running and logged onto Web sites frequented by her daughter.
