Chicago's own Philip Corboy, 'the Jack Nicklaus of trial lawyers', dies


Philip Corboy, a nationally known personal injury attorney, died early this morning at his home in Chicago. He was 87.

“Phil was a kind, compassionate and marvelous lawyer, and a wonderful husband," his wife, Mary Dempsey, said in a statement issued by the law firm. "I want him to be remembered as someone who cared about people he loved and people he represented.”

Corboy, who co-founded the law firm of Corboy & Demetrio, had practiced personal injury trial law for more than 50 years.

I mentioned this to my wife (a para-legal secretary) and was surprised to hear her say for once in her 20 year career "he was a class act. One firm I always wanted to work for".

I met with him once to ask about an E/R doc that misdiagnosed a brain aneurysm ... he said if I would have died, THAT would be a good lawsuit. Just missed!

His brother Dan was a Captain in A/5 Traffic. He was pleasant enough but you could always find him standing under the stairs at the California Ave. "EL" stop looking up the ladies dresses.

He and his wife were wonderful grand psrents, always available to participate in class functions at the private North Shore 'school' in Winnetka that houses the emotionally damaged children of the very rich.
