It almost sounded like Bill Clinton was telling a joke when he said, "Romney in White House would be calamitous for the country!"
Buffeted by last week’s dismal jobs report and the GOP’s increasing fund-raising prowess, Obama turned to the 42nd President — his new-ish and extremely influential ally — for some coffer-filling help.
After the President’s jet landed at Kennedy Airport, Obama was hustled onto Manhattan for a trio of fund-raisers as a sizable police presence snarled rush-hour traffic.
The first event was held at the home of hedge-funder Marc Lasry, managing partner of Avenue Capital Group and a longtime Clinton backer.
Moments after 5 p.m., the silver-haired former President entered the Lasry kitchen.
After Obama arrived, Clinton stood beside the 44th President in the dining room and attacked Mitt Romney’s recent economic critique of the current administration.
The GOP challenger and former private equity whiz had said the May employment figures — which revealed far lower-than-projected job gains — showed that Obama isn’t up to the task of turning around the economy. But Clinton said Romney economics would be “crazy.”
“Their economic policy is austerity and unemployment now, and then a long-term budget that would explode the debt when the economy recovers, so the interest rates would be so high, nobody would be able to do anything,” Clinton charged.
“So the politics is wrong on the Republican side, the economics are crazy,” Clinton said, adding that Obama has “made the best of a very challenging situation.”
