Joseph and Maeve Higgins - Journey of a Thousand Miles - a Benefit for Joe and Maeve Higgins (Grandchildren of Fallen Police Officer Joseph Higgins)

Joseph Higgins was born in 2003 with Cerebral Palsy and mental retardation. Joe has endured 7 surgeries in his life and continues to have medical issues and mounting medical bills. At the time of Joe’s birth, his father had been laid off of work and remained laid off for the first two years of Joe’s life. Now the family finds themselves in financial hardship with Joe’s previous and current medical bills. Joe has to rely completely on others for his daily care and he is mostly wheelchair bound. Because of Joe’s health issues, he sees many doctors. He has had 7 major surgeries in his 8 years of life. Joe is a growing boy who is now too large for his parents to lift in and out of his wheelchair unassisted, and will soon need to use a wheelchair accessible van.

Maeve is Joe’s 4 year old little sister. She was born with part of her brain missing and a cyst in her brain. Because of this Maeve also has cerebral palsy. Maeve has to wear braces at night and during the day. She makes many trips to Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago and will need a tendon lengthening surgery in the future.

Joe and Maeve are life long residents of Mt. Greenwood. Joe’s father is an Evergreen Park Police Officer and his mother is a nurse at Little Company of Mary Hospital. They are also grandchildren of fallen Chicago Police Officer Joseph Higgins.

On May 6, 2012 the Higgins Family and Friends will be hosting a benefit for Joe and Maeve. The event will be held at Bourbon Street, 3359 W. 115th St., Merrionette Park, IL, from 2pm to 7pm. This fundraiser is a family event. Adults and children are encouraged to join us. With your help and the help of many, we plan to have raffle prizes, silent auctions and entertainment. The names of the people and businesses who have donated to this wonderful cause will be displayed on a PowerPoint presentation that will run during the benefit.

Your support is crucial to the success of this event. All proceeds from the event will go to buying Joe a wheelchair van and paying off Joe and Maeve’s medical expenses.
