A former Hammond woman has been charged in Lake Superior Court for allegedly draining her grandson’s $100,000 college trust fund.
Edna Sue Pate, 73, who lists an address in Minden, La., is charged with stealing at least $100,000 from her grandson’s trust account, which had been established in 2003 with her as trustee.
When the grandson’s father, Pate’s former son-in-law, tried to contact Pate about his son’s December 2011 graduation, Pate ignored all communications, the probable cause affidavit states. A civil suit was filed, and Pate skipped court appearances and had a warrant issued for her arrest.
Bank records show Pate wrote 111 checks totaling $97,007 between February 2004 and November 2007. From a second education trust account opened in December 2009 and closed with a negative balance in April 2010, Pate made 49 withdrawals totaling $6,483 at an ATM at Majestic Star II in Gary or Ameristar in East Chicago.
Pates gambling losses at Majestic Star totaled $93,662.
