Fallen firefighters to be honored on Memorial Day

The 80th Annual Memorial Day Parade and Mass is scheduled for Monday to honor deceased members of the Chicago Fire Department and the department's American Legion Post No. 667.

Uniformed members will meet at 9:15 a.m. at the corner of Morgan Avenue and Roosevelt Road, and a procession led by the Chicago Fire Department Pipes and Drums will begin at 9:30 a.m., officials said. A mass will follow at 10 a.m. at Holy Family Church, 1080 W. Roosevelt Rd.

A roll call of all firefighters who have died since last Memorial Day will be read at the mass, and winners of the 2012 Chicago Fireman's Post No. 667 Educational Scholarship for graduating 8th graders will also be announced, officials said.

After the mass, department members will meet at a flagpole near the church for the raising of the flag, a rifle salute, and taps.

years back I complained to the CFD Union but it did no good. Memorial Day is for the fallen servicemen of the united States
It is not a catch all day to honor others. I was always pro cops and firemen. But this is a sacred day for the military and the fire department should not latch on to it.
Why can't they pick another day to honor their fallen brothers?

Memorial Day is to honor our Military servicemen killed in action. It is not a catch all.
Why does the CFD use a sacred military day to honor their fallen brothers? Notice I said sacred.
Out of 265 days they could certainly find another day to use.
I have always been pro cops and firemen. But they have no business using this day.

Fallen firefighters should be honored another day, like the cops do.

Do firemen play with their hoses on Memorial Day?

Hilarious.

As a member of the CFD and a prior member of the military I agree the CFD should pick a different day. This is not our day it is the day to remember the military fallen.

Then again trying to talk to our union heads is as much fun as beating your head against the wall. The fucks just seem to do wtf they want anyway.

Wow time really flies when you've got nothing better to do. Instead of sitting around complaining about the firemen do a good thing, visit our servicemen & women at one of the V.A hospitals. maybe bring some candy or even used clothes to veteran's retirement home in Manteno. our veteran's have served us well, spare an hour. you'd be suprised how fulfilling this can be, and you might be the only visitor they get. myself and my two boys go regularly and offer a kind word, a little support. They way the Vet's eyes light up is enough to keep you coming back. Much healthier for you than worrying about what the CFD is or isn't doing.
