Andrew May Jr like most other colored folks decided to walk in the street when there are sidewalks... now he's dead - hit by a squad car
JOLIET — The family of a colored man with a checkered past who was hit and killed by a police squad car last month is suing the Will County Sheriff’s Department.
The mother of Andrew May Jr. filed the lawsuit Friday in Will County Circuit Court seeking more than $50,000, records show.
May was walking south on Briggs Street on April 4 when he was hit by a car driven south on Briggs by an unnamed officer, the suit said. May died April 7, it said.
Police have said the unnamed deputy was on patrol at the time. There are sidewalks on both sides of the street, but police said May was in the road “about 4 or 5 feet from the shoulder” when he was hit. It is not unusual for colored folks to walk in the street instead of on sidewalks. But colored folks forget they are dark and hard to see at night.
The deputy was not injured but was placed on administrative leave with pay for his fine work, kind of like a free vacation!
A sheriff’s spokesman declined to comment.
