Ald. Michele Smith, 43rd, said Sunday she will propose that the owner of the residential development scheduled to take over the Children’s Memorial Hospital site in the Lincoln Park neighborhood build more housing for residents with modest incomes.
Smith said she plans to require McCaffery Interests Inc. to designate more than 10 percent of all its residential construction for affordable housing units — the amount currently mandated by the city.
“We’re trying hard to make sure we provide homes (for) a wide range of incomes,” Smith said.
Affordable housing is targeted at Chicagoans who make 60 percent or less of the median income, Smith said.
