Colored Harlem horror: Gunman kills teen sister, shoots mom, then opens fire on cops
A gunman killed his 13-year-old sister, shot his mother and was then wounded in a firefight with cops in Harlem Tuesday morning, police said.
The suspect, who was struck in the thigh and was expected to recover from his injury, was arrested.
The first round of gunfire erupted after 3 a.m. in a 12th floor apartment at the Polo Grounds Houses near W. 155th St. and Eighth Ave.
"I was laying down when I heard the shots,” said Karen Williams, 55, who lives four floors below.
“I turned the TV down and I heard three more shots."
Cops got a 911 call of a shooting and arrived to find a 44-year-old woman shot several times and the teenage girl with a head wound.
Williams said she saw the mother being taken out of the building by paramedics.
“She had a hole over the right side of her head above her eyebrow. She was alive. Her eyes were rolling side to side. I looked at her and I said, ‘God help her.’
“Her face was swollen up. I couldn't recognize her face ... Blood was all over her. Her head was bleeding."
Though gravely wounded, the mother identified her son as the shooter and gave police a description of the 28-year-old man.
A sergeant and his partner spotted the suspect and chased him on foot. A firefight erupted, and the cops shot the man in the legs and torso, police said.
“It must have been 20 shots maybe more,” a 54-year-old woman who lives nearby said.
“The police were shooting at the guy from 10 or 15 feet away. It was horrible. Thank God it wasn't in the daytime."
The gunman was taken to Harlem Hospital in serious condition.
His mother was in critical condition at the same hospital, and the 13-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police recovered a .22-caliber pistol.
