Prosecutors: Man charged with trying to run down cop had been drinking tequila
After police saw him drinking tequila in a vehicle in a gas station parking lot, a 23-year-old Chicago man drove in reverse toward an officer before speeding away, crashing into a tree and being shot in the ankle by police, prosecutors said.
Ronald Pitts, on crutches and wearing a blue hospital gown, wept and proclaimed his innocence as Cook County Judge James Brown ordered him held on $250,000 bond Sunday afternoon. He is charged with aggravated assault of a police officer, aggravated fleeing, drinking on a public way and marijuana possession.
