Earlier a Chicago police officer was shot and now man shot by the police

A man in his 30s was wounded by gunfire from a Chicago police officer today, authorities said.

The shooting took place at 12:49 p.m. in the 8200 block of South Stewart Avenue, said Officer Dan O'Brien of Police News Affairs.

Gresham District tactical officers attempted to pull over a vehicle on the 7900 block of South Lafayette Avenue, but the vehicle did not stop, according to a police statement.

Officers followed the vehicle for a short distance and the vehicle struck a tree, according to the statement.

Three occupants of the vehicle were taken into custody, but the driver fled on foot, police said.
