They claim there is "CLOSURE" for the family when the person responsible is apprehended and/or punished.... The truth is there is never ever any closure for the family. The parents will forever have a broken heart for the loss of their child, brothers and sisters live the rest of their lives missing their sibling. You can't change history but it certainly plays a role in the future.Photo: Maria Lech, left, mother of Melissa Lech, and Michelle Lech, Melissa's sister, look over an ad placed on NASCAR driver Kevin Conway's car at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet last September to bring attention to the hit-and-run accident. A man has been charged in a 2008 hit-and-run accident that killed a 20-year-old college student after he showed up at the home of a relative and confessed, police say.
David H. McCarthy, 27, of Naperville, told the relative he was behind the wheel of the car that struck and killed Melissa Lech, according to Joliet Police Cmdr. Brian Benton.
McCarthy then left the house and the relative called a detective who had been working for years on the case. The detective was able to locate McCarthy in Naperville, based on information he had told the family, Benton said.
Police went to McCarthy’s home and charged him with causing personal injury and leaving the scene of an accident causing a death, Benton said.
Benton did not know why McCarthy showed up at a relative's home four years after the accident.
