Oldest serving cop in US dies after 63 years of policing also a WWii soldier

Photo: Manuel Curry, seen here, the oldest active duty police officer in the United States

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (AFP) –
The oldest active duty police officer in the United States, who battled the Nazis on the beaches of Normandy and the chaos which ravaged New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, has died at the age of 84.

Sergeant Major Manuel Curry served with the New Orleans Police Department for more than 63 years until he became ill several weeks ago.

"He'll be buried as a hero," said William Trepagnier, a 44-year NOPD veteran who was among the generations of officers mentored by Curry.

Policing was Curry's life. New Orleans his only home.

And while hundreds of younger officers went missing and even joined in the looting as the city descended into chaos in August 2005, then 81-year-old Curry stayed at his post.

He used the same grit and determination that won him a Legion of Honor in 2004 for his role in the Normandy invasion that liberated France in World War II.

"The worst thing that ever happened (to me) was Omaha Beach," he told Agence France Presse in a 2006 interview. "(Katrina) was the second. I'll never forget Omaha Beach and I'll never forget this."

As the wind and rain pelted his city, Curry shuttled storm victims to safety, stopping only after he was hit in the shoulder by a falling tree branch and the rising water made it impossible for him to drive.

But he was soon back at work and slept in a car for more than a month until a cruise ship was brought in to provide temporary housing for the city's homeless police officers.

When asked why he didn't admit that he was too old to work amid the madness, he shrugged and smiled.

"Once you get this in your blood you like it," he explained.

Curry started walking the beat in 1946, when police officers didn't have radios and would tap their nightsticks on the pavement to call for help.

In the heady days of the 1950s, Curry broke up dice games along Rampart street where the jazz standards of the likes of Louis Armstrong could be heard spilling out of the bars that sat on every corner.

Things got tense in the 1960s when the civil rights movement began to challenge the segregation that had long governed this port city which had played a key role in the slave trade.

Curry was assigned to man the door when the first school in the city was integrated.

"We stood at the doorway to make sure she got in safely," he said. "They called us names -- nigger lovers and all that -- but we just ignored them."

The real problems came in the 1980s when the city was overwhelmed by drug addiction and the violence and crime that followed.

A year after Katrina's floods swamped 80 percent of the city, Curry said he was hopeful that New Orleans could rebuild itself but worried to see some of that same sickness creep back.

And in 2007, he cheerfully told a reporter he had cultivated several new informants, a reversal of fortunes from 2004, when he glumly concluded he had outlived all of his old sources.

Curry died at Touro Infirmary, a hospital located one block from his beloved Sixth Police District.

Employment Opportunity - Wanted: Male Prostitutes at Nevada Brothel in Hopes of Boosting Business

"I just had the 60 minutes special with Det. Shavedlongcock! It felt like I was riding the electric bull at full speed! Well worth the money ladies!!!"

It seems that even the world’s oldest profession is suffering from the recession, leaving the brothel industry looking for new ways to make money.

Enter male prostitutes.

Two hours north of Las Vegas, Nevada's the Shady Lady is looking for dapper dudes to cater to the other half. For the first time, the brothel is offering up men for hire, and its owner sat down with FOX News to talk about the change in strategy.

"There are a lot of career-minded women out there who are looking for romance but not necessarily a relationship," Shady Lady owner Bobbi Davis told FOX.

Other venues across the state also have inquired about adding men to the menu. But brothel industry lobbyist George Flint discourages the practice because he believes it is socially unacceptable — and he doubts it will have any effect on the bottom line.

Flint estimated that business at bordellos is down by up to 70 percent at some establishments.

"Like every industry, the brothel business is not very good," he told FOX. "Brothels survive on disposable income, which there is not a lot of right now."

Davis thinks it’s a gamble worth taking. She says she has had women ask for men in the past and is simply filling a need.

"Women want someone to have a nice time with — and just like men they don’t want to have to worry about calling them in the morning," she said.

Overweight, toothless men covered in tattoos and body piercings need not apply, Davis warned.

And though being physically fit is important, being of prime age — between 30 and 50 years old — is an even bigger requirement, she added.

But men and women have slightly different needs when it comes to prostitutes, according to David. Male clients want youth and eye candy while "women want someone who knows what he's doing."

The cost for a male professional will be the same as that of a female: $500 for two hours, $800 for three. But since pricing is by the hour and women usually want more time with their guys-for-hire, costs could soar, Davis said.

The Shady Lady proprietor said she won't discriminate if her male prostitutes want to entertain male clients instead of female ones.

The Shady Lady is among the 25 legal brothels in Nevada in 10 different counties.

Sounds like I may have an employment opportunity during my furlough! Wooo - Hoooo!

CHICAGO - 73 years, 15 Children later, Eleanor is a 90 year old high school grad

As a teenager during the Great Depression, Eleanor Benz, now 90, watched her parents struggle to provide for seven children.
In her senior year at the Chicago Public Schools' Lake View High, Benz dropped out of school to help.
"I only had a few months left, but a job opened up where my sister worked, and that was a rare thing in 1936, to find a job before you finished high school," said Benz, of Gurnee.

"It was turn your paycheck over ... keep a couple of dollars for yourself. Then with getting married and raising kids, I never did go back."

Fifteen children, 54 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren later, the Gurnee grandmother last week received the sacrificed diploma from Lake View, at 4015 N. Ashland, along with a yearbook from her sophomore year, 1934, and her registration records from 1936 -- items discovered by Lake View's school secretary.

"I was overwhelmed by it all," Benz said.

Born in Chicago on May 23, 1919, Benz was raised in the Lake View neighborhood. She worked for several years after leaving school, then married John F. Benz, a young printing apprentice, in 1941 before moving to north suburban Mundelein.

"I had 15 children within a span of 23 years, but I always had a book in my hands," Benz said.

She later went to night school for typing and bookkeeping, but still, no high school diploma. It was on the eve of her 90th birthday that her children learned what had always nagged at their mother.

"One of my sisters was writing a paper about the Depression, and [she] interviewed Mom," Benz' daughter Laurie Harrington said. "When she asked what Mom's greatest disappointment was, she answered, 'Having to quit school a half year before I would have graduated.' "

Her children contacted Lake View, reaching secretary Karen Siciliano -- herself a 1961 Lake View graduate.

"The school secretary took this on as a mission," Harrington said.

"I thought, 'What a wonderful thing for these kids to try to grant their mother's wish'," Siciliano said. "I started searching the archives and finally found her in the 1934 yearbook. It turns out she was only a few months shy of graduation."

Apprised of the situation, the school's principal approved Benz' diploma. And because the 2009 class was graduating, there were extra caps and gowns around. One was sent -- with a 1936 tassel -- and a wooden replica of Lake View in the 1930s.

All were presented to Benz at her 90th birthday party on May 30.

"She put the cap on immediately," Harrington said.

"I was ecstatic," Benz said. "My diploma is dated Feb. 1, 1936, and signed by Olice Winter. He was the principal then. I feel blessed. Although, you know nowadays, even a high school graduation isn't enough. You need to go to college."

WOW, grabbed a job during the Great Depression and had 15 children and WAS NEVER ON WELFARE? Hmmmm... I wonder why that was???

Congratulations Ms. Benz! For not only getting your HS Dipolma but for not abusing the system like so many do!

From the e-mail department - This one from MagicAnd611 (Connie) - And I am behind in reading all the e-mails - So I am sorry and will catch up

EVEN THE DETECTIVE SHAVEDLONGCOCK JACKASS WAS LAUGHING AT THIS ONE

Subject: FW: event # 0915204186
Got this from a friend of mine.

This is something I stumbled upon and think everyone should read, not that you don't already know the quality of supervision and "leadership" on this department. And to all my supervisor friends, sorry but even all of you know.
These are your leaders Officers. CYA.

Here's yet ANOTHER example of a quality Supervisor on display at the CPD:

When you have the opportunity to do so, look up event # 0915204186. For those of you reading this at home or elsewhere without access to the PCAD or a PDT, I'll give you a brief synopsis of what this event entails.

On 01 June 09 at 0836 hrs., beat 922 received a job under the listed event number. It seems a certain clout-heavy Lieutenant, upon approaching her TAKE HOME department vehicle, was denied access to same vehicle. "What was it"? you ask that impeded her access. Was it a group of gang bangers participating in some sort of initiation rite of intimidation? NO. Was it a rabid canine, frothing at the mouth, growling and barking ferociously, trying to maul the Lieutenant? No. Maybe vandals caught in the act of damaging the department vehicle? Again, NO.

HERE'S WHAT IT WAS...

THE LIEUTENANT'S NEIGHBOR HAD THEIR SPRINKLER ON.

That's right, you read the previous sentence correctly. Seems the trajectory of spraying water prohibited the Lieutenant from getting into her police car without getting wet. So instead of reverting to her years of honed "leadership skills" and "problem solving" expertise gained through two promotions, thus finding a solution to her dilemma, she simply picked up her DEPARTMENT cellular telephone and dialed "911". And by doing so, this supervisor further taxed an already over-worked beat car in an extremely busy district. How hard would it have been for a person of her supervisory stature to concoct a plan of action, such as:

1) Waiting for the sprinkler to oscillate away from her...OR

2) Turning the hose off at the spigot...OR

3) Kinking the hose or changing the direction of the spray...OR

4) Sliding her fat ass into the car from the opposite side...OR

5) (When numbers 1 thru 4 aren't viable options, i.e. in the event of an in-ground sprinkler system), making a mad-dash to the driver's door of vehicle, unlocking same door, quickly entering the vehicle and then closing the door

Oh...did I mention that this Lieutenant is assigned to unit 126/Auditing and Internal Control Division (AKA "Inspector")? AND that this job was dispatched as a priority "1A"? AND that beat 990 also responded to the scene? All of this ironic in the sense in that part of this Lieutenant's day-to-day responsibilities include ensuring the effective and efficient use of manpower, prioritizing calls for police service, time and asset management, etcetera.

Wait just a minute...can I get odds on her promotions as "meritorious" in origin given the obvious absence of common sense? If not meritorious, how about double-or-nothing on a hidden existence for the majority of her career? Maybe a combination of the two? Twenty-one (21) years with the CPD, and this is what may lead the troops into battle someday?

I find it absolutely sickening that someone of such rank, representing what USED TO BE the finest law enforcement department in this country, called for an EMERGENCY solution to a "problem" easily solved by any 5 year old. This was a total waste of resources, time and effort starting at the call-taker and working it's way through the dispatcher and eventually down to the responding officers.

If this dummy couldn't successfully outsmart a sprinkler, how do you think she might handle a police-involved shooting when she may someday be YOUR Field Lieutenant? Who knows, maybe she just stays home every time it rains?

Hey, J-Fed! Look no further (at least at this exact moment) than this latest example of incompetence, ignorance and embarrassment by a supervisor as to why morale is in the shitter and why most of us lowly blue shirts can't/won't trust 99% of supervisors to "have our backs". And just for clarification...as it appeared on the job ticket, this particular Lieutenant's last name was misspelled. It actually ends with a "C-U-A".

John Kass on the Officer Valadez Killing - 2 belonged behind bars before officer's slaying

Chicago Tribune's John Kass - Hits another GRAND SLAM with this article about the two asswipes that killed one of our very own - P.O. Valadez. Please take a few seconds out to e-mail Mr. Kass and thank him. In today's media world, it's hard to find a guy like John Kass. E-Mail JSKASS@Tribune.com
Just two weeks before young Chicago Police Officer Alex Valadez was shot down on the edge of a vacant South Side lot, his alleged killer, Shawn Gaston, was in court, accused of another probation violation on a felony gun charge.

That's right, another probation violation.

It wasn't Gaston's first alleged violation of probation. It wasn't his second. It was his third, Cook County prosecutors confirmed late last week.

Gaston, a member of the Gangster Disciples street gang, was arrested in 2007 for carrying a loaded handgun. He pleaded guilty to the charge of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, a felony.

In that case, he was granted probation by Cook County Circuit Judge Bertina Lampkin, not unusual for someone with misdemeanors but no felonies on his record.

Prosecutors said Gaston violated the terms of his probation by twice testing positive for marijuana and for failing to perform community service as ordered.

Gaston obviously wasn't someone police and probation officers ignored. He was on their radar.

Common sense suggests that Judge Lampkin, a former prosecutor with a reputation as being pro-prosecutor, would have been angry with Gaston's repeat violations of her mercy.

You might think she'd order a gangbanger with a gun who thumbs his nose at the system to at least be held on a high bond, so he could think things over in the county jail.

But this is Cook County.

And cops and judges and prosecutors are hauling water with a sieve.

"They just don't take gun cases seriously," said a ranking officer in line with me at Valadez's wake, on the day before he was to be buried. "You'd think they'd take them seriously, but they don't."

Our politicians make lots of noise when it comes to guns and violence. They make speeches and stand in front of the cameras and shake their fingers in anger.

But the woman who was raped in the suburbs and now has a gun in the drawer isn't the problem. The old guy in the city -- feeling he must violate the city's handgun ban because he's not a politician with bodyguards but an old man alone -- is not the problem.

The problem is this: thugs with guns. And if they violate probation on gun charges, they should be incarcerated.

But on May 19, Judge Lampkin continued Gaston's probation violation case to July 7, records show. So Gaston walked out of the criminal courthouse at 26th and California. He didn't have to put up any money. All he had to do was sign his name and walk free.

Thirteen days later, Officer Valadez was dead.

Who can say whether Gaston and his alleged accomplice, Kevin Walker, are guilty? They'll have a trial.

And the defense will try to show that they couldn't possibly have known Valadez was a cop when the trigger was pulled.

But the repeat allegations of violations of probation aren't debatable. And FOP President Mark Donahue has written a letter to Cook County Chief Judge Timothy Evans, asking why Gaston and Walker were not in jail, but on the street. (Walker was on probation after pleading guilty to aggravated attempted armed robbery.)

"For years, judges had to release these people based on overcrowding of the Cook County Jail. That's not the case anymore," Donahue said. "There's plenty of bed space, and for the judiciary to feel they still need to release these predators back out on the street, there has to be an explanation."

They held the wake Friday at Blake Lamb Funeral Home on 103rd Street in Oak Lawn, before the funeral on Saturday.

There was a hurtful silence in the line. It stretched through the parking lot and down the block. You could hear hard shoes on the walk, cars passing, kids playing ball in a yard, but not much else.

Inside, the silence was worse, except for a young woman in black being comforted by other women in black. She wasn't shrieking. She was trying to catch her breath between sobs.

All the women of the family were in black. Most of the men and women in line were in blue.

There were photos of Valadez, only 27 when he was killed, next to the flowers: on his bed as a baby, later as a toddler surrounded by books, and later still, the young officer at 12, in a new suit, the boy being serious for the camera.

About 8 miles to the northeast, near 60th and Hermitage where Valadez was shot early Monday, there was another serious young boy, about 12, sitting behind his father on the porch.

"It's a terrible thing what happened to that officer, but there's something good about it, if that's possible," said the man, who identified himself as Cornell. Residents say the neighborhood has swarmed with police since the shooting, and the men who usually hang out on the street are lying low.

"It's so quiet now. Old people feel they can come outside, and sit on the porch, and the old women can mess around in their yards, with their flowers," he said. "It's quiet now."

Quiet like the family of Alex Valadez, sitting straight backed on the couch in front of the casket. Quiet as Shawn Gaston's court file, with the alleged probation violations offering mute testimony to what should have happened, but didn't.

The regular readers of SLC know full well that I have said it a thousand times plus on here. The criminal justice system and prison system is a joke. Time and time again violent street criminals are released back into society just to KILL, SHOOT, SLICE, ROB, RAPE, STEAL or some other crime AGAIN!

A copper who got drunk and accidentally caused a fatal vehicle crash, THROW THE BOOK AT HIM! A black gang banging asshole who kills or shoots another... out on the streets before that DUI copper is even up for parole.

We heard it a million times before from the justice system.. Oh, this one slipped through the cracks, we won't let this happen again! BULLSHIT! The crack in the legal system is as big as the Pacific Ocean. Not only are these violent criminals released time after time, the federal government then rewards them with free welfare checks, free SSI checks, free schooling or free employment training... Billions our tax dollars wasted.

Some say that prisons cost money, prisons do cost money but way less than one of these asshole even impregnating one woman and that child being welfare for a life time.

We live in a "pussy and sissy era". Afraid to put a murderer in an electric chair and fry their ass. You take away some hard working schmuck's life... no big deal, what is more important is that Mookie and Pookie are handle with kid gloves.

Fuck these killers, fuck these child molesters, fuck these gang banging assholes. It is time to bring the noose back to the public square and publicly hang these ass fucks for the crimes they have committed!!!

SLC VIEWER UPDATE - SLC VIEWER UPDATE - SLC VIEWER UPDATE -

Here is just another example of a failed judicial system -

17 year old with an extensive criminal record arrested in rape and murder of 8-month-old
PHOTO: Arnold Ross

A 17-year-old Terrytown, LA man was arrested on charges of aggravated rape and first-degree murder of an 8-month-old child Saturday afternoon, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office said.

Arnold T. Ross, of 136 Friedrichs Road in Terrytown, was booked into the Jefferson Parish Correctional Facility. No bond is available on the first-degree murder charge.

Ross was arrested after officers responded to a call of an unresponsive infant at 1656 Gary Court, Apt. B, near Gretna.

The infant, Da-Von Lonzo, was taken to Ochsner Westbank where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival, according to a release issued by Col. John Fortunato, a spokesman for the sheriff's office.

The death was initially unclassified, but the Jefferson Parish coroner's office later reported it as a homicide after an autopsy of the child's body revealed multiple fractures consistent with a beating and tears in the anus.

Ross, who said he was the boyfriend of the infant's mother, initially told detectives that the baby fell down the stairs while he was babysitting, Fortunato said. But a neighbor reported hearing loud noises coming from the apartment, and investigators noted inconsistencies in Ross's account.

Ross later admitted that he beat the infant repeatedly when he would not stop crying, Fortunato said. When the child began to defecate on himself, Ross said he tried to clean it up, causing the tears, according to the release.

Ross has a record of previous arrests for possession of crack cocaine and marijuana, obscenity, battery on a correctional officer, three counts of battery on a teacher, three counts of theft, illegal carrying of a weapon and assault.

City's Inspector General Hammers Mayor Daley - As usual Daley chuckles and blows it off

The man who is standing up to Mayor Daley
In a city where Mayor Richard Daley reigns largely unchallenged, Inspector General David Hoffman has transformed an office known for pursuing small fish into one that targets Daley allies and dares to criticize how the mayor runs the city.City of Chicago Inspector General David Hoffman

Daley dismisses Inspector General David Hoffman's report critical of parking meter deal
Aldermen approve 15-day review period before future privatization votes on major city assets

Mayor Richard Daley dismissed the city inspector general's new report criticizing his deal to lease parking meters and repeated Wednesday that he didn't rush the City Council into approving the plan.

"Like anything else, you can issue any type of report," Daley said. "I can criticize anything. ... This is a good financial deal."

Daley's comments came as aldermen moved to protect themselves from continued public anger over dramatic price increases and repeated meter breakdowns since the lease deal took effect. The council approved a measure to require a 15-day review period before voting on future privatization deals for major city assets.

Another newly introduced proposal would authorize the council to hire an outside analyst or ask the inspector general to review privatization proposals before the city seeks bids. Thirty-seven of 50 aldermen immediately signed on as co-sponsors of the bill.

Daley sought to rebut Inspector General David Hoffman's contentions the mayor and aldermen moved too fast in approving the $1.15 billion contract. The private company that made the upfront payment to the city in February will operate the system -- and collect money from meters -- for the next 75 years.

Daley aides briefed aldermen on the deal just one day before it got council approval.

"This wasn't an idea just picked out of a hat," Daley said. "This has been talked about almost for two years."

Hoffman blasted top mayoral aides for not analyzing whether the city would have been better served by holding on to the meter system. His report alleged the city could have reaped at least $2.13 billion by retaining control of the meters rather than leasing them.

Daley said he would put his aides up "against anyone in regards to competency."

During the council debate on the 15-day review period proposal, aldermen argued about whether they erred in voting 40-5 for the deal at a special meeting in December.

The private parking company, led by New York-based financial giant Morgan Stanley, has encountered repeated technological problems with the meters and new pay machines. As part of the deal, rates rose dramatically at 36,000 meters across the city.

"A lot of people are looking back and wondering if they made the right decision," said Ald. Rey Colon (35th), who voted against the parking system lease.

Ald. Joe Moore (49th) said he wishes he had not voted for it and now wants the city to cancel the contract. "We have shirked our responsibility to really examine these deals closely," Moore said, praising Hoffman.

Other aldermen said they have no regrets and were unimpressed by Hoffman's findings.

Longtime Daley loyalist Ald. Bernard Stone (50th), echoed top mayoral aides who questioned Hoffman's standing to analyze the deal.

"He's not an MBA. He's not even a CPA," said Stone, who also objected when the inspector general initiated a vote-fraud investigation in 2007 that resulted in charges against a top Stone aide.

Hoffman issued only a one-sentence statement Wednesday saying he stands by his report.

Also at Wednesday's council meeting:

--Aldermen voted 36-9 for an ordinance aimed at "bucket boys" and other street musicians, but one alderman questioned whether it would lead to any real crackdown. The new ordinance allows the city to revoke street performers' permits if they get two violations for excessive noise in a year.

--Daley introduced a proposal to establish stricter penalties for building owners who do not display inspection certificates in elevators or who fail to comply with an order to remove a car from service. The move comes after the Tribune reported last month that 70 percent of elevators in Chicago hadn't been inspected in the last year.

Something is up here... The once quiet and Daley appointed City Inspector General is all of a sudden publicly hitting the Mayor. I wouldn't be surprised at all if it is later learned that Mayor Daley himself ask Inspector General Hoffman to publicly jump on the Mayor just to throw the heat off everything else for a while. Nobody would go against King Shortshanks who wants to keep their job.

When white guys dragged a black man to death in Texas a few years back - It was an international hate crime story - But black on black? It's OK!

Man dies after SW Side shooting, car dragging
Chicago, IL -One of the five people shot early Saturday in separate attacks on the South and Southwest Sides died of his injuries later that day, officials said.

Daniel Damien, 20, of the 4900 block of South Kolin Avenue was shot in the abdomen and leg about 2:45 a.m. at the corner near his home, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Police had previously reported that he was shot about 3:30 a.m. Saturday.

The victim was standing on the street next to a car when a black car pulled up and occupants fired on him, said News Affairs Officer Laura Kubiak. One occupant apparently grabbed Damien and dragged him alongside the black car as it fled.

Damien was released after the black car hit another vehicle, Kubiak said.

He was pronounced dead about 10:45 a.m. Saturday at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to the medical examiner's office.

Nobody was in custody in the slaying as of 6:35 a.m. Sunday, Kubiak said.

Four other people were shot before him early Saturday in unrelated attacks.

Two men were shot about 2:10 a.m. in the 5700 block of South Normal Boulevard; a woman was shot about 1:15 a.m. in the 700 block of East 50th Street; and another man was shot about 12:05 a.m. in the 5800 block of South Carpenter Street, police said.

The victims reportedly were taken to area hospitals in good condition.

Shortly before midnight Sunday, a man was beaten by unknown assailants in the 6900 block of West 52nd Street and was taken to Loyola University Hospital in serious condition, police said.

Hmmmmm.... You shoot a man and then you drag him with your car until he dies... And it's a little news story in the Chicago Tribune. Your a few white guys who drag a black man to death in Texas (And it wasn't over race but over some things that happened when the white guys and the black guy were all serving time together in a Texas prison) and it is international news.

Give me a break already... Blacks have killed more of their own people than any white or any hate group have had ever killed. But God forbid if a white cop shoots and kills an armed black man! Then the black community has something to say.

Does anybody other than me think there "may" be a double standard here? Just a little one?

Look for openings in the 5th District real soon...

CPT Jones, the know nothing, political hack, who is tight with the rev-re-rums and is the only reason he got promoted on this job, is ruining what was once a hidden gem on the South side.

Now I know the area to work at is no gem, not by any stretch of the imagination, but the people and bosses you worked for there USED TO BE great. Watch parties, BBQ'S, family parties, you know the things that HELP IMPROVE MORALE when you work in a shithole of an area, deal with baby momma drama with 17 year grandmothers, and have dude shooting each other on a pace that would make the OK Corral seem like a Mormon retreat. NOT ANYMORE!

CPT Jones, he of the "get the ticket and tapes from that FOOT pursuit," is in well over his head, unless you call chatting with the dollies police work. You really fucked it up today though. Tonight, you cock-sucker, you denied officers to go to a funeral, saying "If it was that important you would have gone on your own time". Fuck you! Of course you would not understand why it was important for all of the new kids on the watch to go and pay their respects, because you NEVER were a working cop. NEVER! Not once, look in the mirror, that pussy looking back at you does not lie, you were and ARE a do nothing. How did Old Man Stroger like it again?

Well, that one will come back to bite you in the ass. Go ahead, look at everyones ticket books, their activity, and tell us we need more of this, that, and the other - DOES NOT MATTER. Nobody will do shit FOR YOU! You have officers bidding out to go to the 3rd District, that is akin to people leaving a Carnival cruise to take a ride on the Titanic.

Hell, you're such a dick, even your own boy, CMDR John E. B. is trying to unload your ass without you knowing. Oops, did I let that out in public? My bad, did not mean for that. Yep, your own guy who brought you in is now trying to take you out.

CPT Jones is the type of guy who would have been fragged in a New York minute if chance presented itself.

Police exchange gunfire with offender on Chicago's South Side

Police exchange gunfire after dog attack
Chicago police exchanged gunfire with an individual Friday afternoon in the South Shore neighborhood, but nobody was hurt.

Shortly before 4p.m., that person released a pit bull at Grand Crossing District officers before fleeing the scene, police said tonight.

They said an officer ran after that person into an alley, where, in turn, that person fired a handgun at the officer.

The officer was not hit, but returned fire without striking the individual, who eventually got away. The person's gun was recovered, however.

The exchange of gunfire happened near East 75th Street and South Coles Avenue, police said.

Police could not immediately provide information on what happened to the dog.

Calumet Area detectives and the Independent Police Review Authority, which examines all shootings involving Chicago police officers, were investigating the incident.

Detective Shavedlongcock:

In my years on this job I have never seen so many police shootings in my life. We are getting multiple police shootings each week and even multiple shootings in the same day.

We all heard it before but I have to agree with what I am hearing from so many... This summer is going to be a bitch! We are going to be busy 24/7.

I hate even saying this because everybody already plans on being safe... but please be safe and keep your eyes wide open. We already lost one police officer this year and one is too many already.

Wake held for slain Chicago police officer - God bless and Godspeed to Officer Alex Valadez

Mourners gather at a visitation for slain Chicago Police Officer Alejandro Valadez in Oak Lawn.

Chicago, IL - A line of mourners wrapped around the parking lot and down South Kilpatrick Avenue next to the Blake-Lamb Funeral Home in Oak Lawn this afternoon, where the wake was held for slain Chicago Police Officer Alejandro "Alex" Valadez.

Valadez, 27, a three-year department veteran, was shot and killed earlier this week as he and his partner were responding to calls of gunfire in the South Side's Englewood neighborhood.

Officer Tyrone Jackson, 19-year Chicago police veteran, did not know Valadez but nonetheless waited 45 minutes to pay his respects today.

"When one of us dies, a little part of all of us dies," Jackson said.

Kevin Walker, 21, and Shawn Gaston, 20, were both charged in Valadez's slaying. The suspects were being held without bail in the Cook County Jail.

Detective Shavedlongcock:

I was very impressed and appreciative of the fantastic turnout to this wake. Although I hit it towards the later part of it, I was told by others there that the turnout was very strong the whole day.

And as always, my deepest condolences to the Valadez family which includes a number of Chicago police officers. Godspeed to Alex Valadez....

Thai police say actor David Carradine may have died from accidental suffocation

WOW- At 72 years of age, he may have died from sex play known as auto-erotic asphyxiation!!!

BANGKOK (AP) — Police are speculating that accidental suffocation, not suicide, may have caused the death of American cult actor David Carradine, whose body was found in a hotel closet in the Thai capital with a rope tied to his neck, wrist and genitals.

Celebrity blogs and social networking Web sites were abuzz with news of the death of Carradine — best known for the 1970s TV series "Kung Fu." The circumstances under which he died have led to speculation that the 72-year-old actor may have been engaged in a dangerous form of sex play known as auto-erotic asphyxiation.

The practice involves temporarily cutting off the supply of oxygen to the brain to heighten the effects of a sexual climax.

Carradine's body was discovered Thursday morning in his luxury suite by a chambermaid at Bangkok's Swissotel Nai Lert Park Hotel, said its general manager, Aurelio Giraudo. Police embassy representatives while preparations were being made for its repatriation to the United States, expected to be in the next few days. Under U.S. privacy laws, the embassy is not allowed to release further details without permission of the family of the deceased.

Dr. Nanthana Sirisap, director of Chulalongkorn Hospital's Autopsy Center, told reporters that the autopsy was conducted because of the "unusual circumstances surrounding Carradine's death," but did not elaborate.

Police Lt. Teerapop Luanseng had said Thursday that Carradine's body was found "naked, hanging in a closet," and police at that time suspected suicide. However, no suicide note has been found.

Carradine's friends and associates insisted he would not kill himself.

"All we can say is, we know David would never have committed suicide," said Tiffany Smith of Binder & Associates, his management company. "We're just waiting for them to finish the investigation and find out what really happened. He really appreciated everything life has to give ... and that's not something David would ever do to himself."

Pornthip Rojanasunand, director of Thailand's Central Institute of Forensic Science, said the circumstances suggested that Carradine may have died performing auto-erotic asphyxiation, which is said to result in a form of giddiness and euphoria — similar to alcohol or drug intoxication — that enhances the sexual experience.

"In some cases it can suggest murder, too. But sometimes when the victim is naked and in bondage, it can suggest that the victim is doing it to himself," said Pornthip, who is considered the country's top criminal forensics expert but who did not take part in the autopsy. "If you hang yourself by the neck, you don't need so much pressure to kill yourself. Those who get highly sexually aroused tend to forget this fact."

Carradine had flown to Thailand last week and began work on a film titled "Stretch" two days before his death, Smith said. He had several other projects lined up after the action film, which was being directed by Charles de Meaux.

Carradine was in good spirits when he left the U.S. for Thailand on May 29 to work on "Stretch," his manager Smith said by phone from Beverly Hills.

Monica Donati, a spokesman for the French film company MK2, which was making "Stretch," said in statement from Paris that the film crew in Bangkok was "clearly shocked" by Carradine's death but would finish shooting. Carradine only had three more days of filming left in Bangkok, she said.

"David was apparently very happy about this new role and about filming again," she said.

Hotel manager Giraudo described Carradine as "very much a person full of life" who chatted with the staff.

"He was a great piano player and played a few nights in the hotel lobby," he said, "He also played the flute and the guests really enjoyed it. I mentioned to him that I had seen (the movie) 'Crank' with my family and that was the last smile he gave me."

Carradine, a martial arts practitioner himself, was best known for the U.S. TV series "Kung Fu," which aired in 1972-75. He played Kwai Chang Caine, an orphan who was raised by Shaolin monks and fled China after killing the emperor's nephew in retaliation for the murder of his kung fu master.

Carradine also appeared in more than 100 feature films with such directors as Martin Scorsese, Ingmar Bergman and Hal Ashby.

He returned to the top in recent years as the title character in Quentin Tarantino's two-part saga "Kill Bill." Bill, the worldly father figure of a pack of crack assassins, was a shadowy presence in 2003's "Kill Bill — Vol. 1." In that film, one of Bill's former assassins (Uma Thurman) begins a vengeful rampage against her old associates, including Bill.

What is wrong with just plain old good long, hard and deep sex? Why do people have to tie ropes around their neck, their dick, their wrists??? Some have said that it makes your orgasm stronger and better... I say ALL ORGASMS are great already and I don't need it to feel any better than it does already. Especially when you may end up dead and found with 1/2 your body parts tied up.

Save the rope to tie HER wrists and legs.... at least you will know that you will be alive when it's over.

Police raid nets $8 million in cocaine - Mayor Daley tells Jody Weis to sell it, the city needs the cash!

Chicago police seized an estimated $8 million in cocaine and more than $30,000 cash during a raid at a Southwest Side residence, police said early this evening.

Alejandro Galvan, 38, of the 5500 block of South Archer Avenue, was arrested Thursday after the seizure was conducted at his residence and garage. Police said he was charged with manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance.

While officers were staking out the residence, police said, they saw a man drive a vehicle into the garage while Galvan waited for him. A short while later, police saw Galvan exit the garage with a shoe box, which he placed into the trunk of his vehicle, police said.

The officers, believing drugs were being transported, then approached Galvan, who gave the officers permission to search his vehicle, police said.

Officers discovered 4 kilograms of cocaine in the shoebox, and an additional 145 pounds of cocaine in the garage and in a hidden compartment in the vehicle inside, police said.

The man who drove the vehicle into the garage, Miguel Ramirez, 35, of the 1600 block of South Kostner Avenue, was ticketed for driving without a license and failure to signal.

NY Car Ticketed Repeatedly With Dead Body Inside

NYC Woman Believes Her Father Lay Dead Inside His Car For Weeks While Police Wrote Tickets Over And Over
Photo: A New York City woman said her father apparently lay dead for weeks in a minivan while police repeatedly left parking tickets on the vehicle, seen here, below the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway underpass.

NEW YORK (CBS) ―A New York City woman said her father apparently lay dead for weeks in a minivan while police repeatedly left parking tickets on the vehicle, seen here, below the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway underpass.

A New York City woman said her father apparently lay dead for weeks in a minivan while police repeatedly left parking tickets on the vehicle, seen here, below the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway underpass.

It was that of a missing man, and now his family wants to know to how officers could ticket the vehicle numerous times -- and never notice what was inside.

Jennifer Morales, who didn't want her face filmed by CBS 2 HD cameras, wondered how her father's body could go unnoticed for so long.

"I'm shocked. I'm surprised, um...," Morales said.

The daughter of 58-year-old George Morales wants everyone to remember her handyman father in a different way, not as a decomposed body found in a van under the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway on Wednesday. He'd been dead a month, in a van with four parking tickets.

"If you see an abandoned vehicle, you don't report it? You wait a month?" Jennifer Morales wondered.

Morales' daughter said her father left their apartment in Washington Heights on May 5in a van owned by a friend. George Morales was headed for Long Island, but he just vanished.

His daughter suspects George Morales, who suffered from diabetes and heart problems, may have felt ill, and pulled off the road for a nap. A window was cracked. The odor became overpowering. After the car was ticketed each Monday for a month, a marshal, about to tow the van, noticed a body in the back seat.

"If you see a car has already three to four tickets and you just slabbing more, at least call 9-1-1 and say there's a car here that's not moving," Jennifer Morales said.

When he was found, his daughter said, he was not covered with a blanket or coat, but was in plain view of anyone who looked inside. She wondered: what if there was a person inside a car who was ill and needed help?

Jennifer Morales said it should be a lesson to all traffic agents and police officers: don't ticket without looking inside.

The NYC Medical Examiner's office has told the family it appears George Morales died of a heart attack. There was no word from police as to why tickets were repeatedly issued without taking a look inside.

Thank you to the person who posted this information in the comment section.

Funny thing is when I "google" parking tickets, dead person and car... there were a lot of news stories about this type of incident happening all across the country. I do remember the same thing happening here in Chicago more than a few times. But when it happened in Chicago, the cops always had the same excuse... they must of put that body in the car AFTER I ticketed that vehicle...LOL But with that said, it really doesn't hurt to look inside the car when you are giving it a parking ticket. The few seconds it takes to look through the windows, it can save you a lot of problems down the road.

Illegal Alien Lettuce Picker charged in murder of pregnant girlfriend in Hanover Park

Rafael Alvarado (inset) was charged with killing his pregnant girlfriend at her home in Hanover Park.

A man was charged with first-degree murder Thursday in the death of his pregnant girlfriend, who was found beaten inside her northwest suburban home.

Norma Favela, 31, of the 1700 block of Linden Avenue in Hanover Park, was found with signs of “trauma” in her home and pronounced dead on the scene, a spokesman for the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office said.

Police received a 911 call from the home at 12:30 a.m., Hanover Park police Deputy Chief David Webb said.

Favela, who was seven months pregnant, was found dead in the home, and had suffered a "severe beating," Hanover Park Mayor Rodney Craig said.

Favela's boyfriend was taken into custody almost immediately after she was found.

Rafael Alvarado, 32, of the Linden Avenue address, was charged Thursday night with one count of first-degree murder and one count of intentional homicide of an unborn child, according to a release from Hanover Park police.

Craig said two other children were inside the home at the time of the incident.

“Based on the 911 call, we called the Major Case Assistance team [MCAT],” Webb said.

Webb said the public was not in danger and he would not comment on whether the person who called 911 was the person who died.

Alvarado is scheduled to appear in bond court Friday morning.

An autopsy for Favela is scheduled for Friday.

City to lay off over 1,000 workers if Unions don't kiss the azz of King Shortshanks

City Hall rattles layoff saber at unions
City Hall continued to pressure labor unions for concessions today as officials said layoff notices could go out early next week if a deal isn't reached soon.

Chief Financial Officer Gene Saffold outlined falling city revenues at a news conference and said unions need to allow for unpaid days off and other cost-cutting measures to avoid layoffs. The city faces a major budget shortfall.

"The reality is we won't be able to address this shortfall without reducing personnel costs," said Saffold at the city's monthly revenue update. "We will continue to talk to the unions so we can do everything we can to avoid layoffs."

Saffold, however, declined to say how many layoff notices could go out or what departments would be affected.

Non-union city employees already face 17 unpaid days off.

Facebook drinking photos show parole violation in fatal DUI case
Court orders woman, 20, to wear alcohol ankle monitor
Having their pictures posted on Facebook while partying with friends may not seem like a big deal to many college students. But for a Campton Hills woman charged in a DUI-related fatal crash, those pictures had serious consequences.

Under orders from a Kane County judge, Erika Scoliere, 20, was outfitted Thursday with an alcohol-monitoring ankle bracelet after police found online photos of her consuming alcohol on Facebook.

The woman, who is awaiting trial, was charged with reckless homicide and aggravated DUI after a July 2007 collision in South Elgin that killed a motorcyclist.

As a condition of her bail, Scoliere had been ordered not to consume alcohol or be around people who are drinking, but South Elgin police found photos of Scoliere, who attends college in Ohio, drinking with friends.

"It appears the defendant is having a grand old time drinking tequila," Judge Thomas Mueller said during Wednesday's court hearing as he leafed through copies of the pictures.

" 'Erika passed out in my bed. Ha Ha,' " the judge said, quoting one of the captions.

Jennifer Grasz, a spokeswoman for careerbuilder.com, said situations like Scoliere's show the danger of posting questionable material. Increasing numbers of employers use Facebook and other sites to check on potential employees, she said.

"Once you post something online, it's online for an unlimited amount of time," Grasz said.

A basic rule, she said, is not to post material you wouldn't feel comfortable being seen by a family member or a prospective employer.

Assistant State's Atty. Steve Sims argued for the ankle monitor for Scoliere, noting that she had previously violated her bail.

In a 2008 hearing, it was revealed that she never contacted the county court services department for any of the weekly phone check-ins while away at school. Scoliere's attorney had characterized the situation as a misunderstanding.

Her attorney, Stephen Komie, argued that the anklet would be open up Scoliere to public scorn. "It imposes the red 'A' that Hawthorne talked about in 'The Scarlet Letter,' " Komie said.

But the judge, noting the previous violation, said, "she has now earned the privilege of wearing the SCRAM bracelet."

SCRAM stands for Secure Continuous Remote Alcohol Monitor. The device can detect alcohol via perspiration and will alert authorities. Scoliere will be charged $15 a day to wear the device, which has been in use in Kane County since 2007.

After the hearing, Scoliere, accompanied by her parents, left the courtroom in tears.

Had this been a police officers who was out on bond for a fatal/DUI accident... I bet the cop would have been sent back to jail for violating the conditions of bail bond. But here we have a underage drinker who killed a person and now she is on face book being shown underage drinking again and in direct violation of her bail bond.

AND SHE IS IN COURT CRYING BECAUSE SHE HAS TO WEAR AN ANKLE BRACLET? She should be happy as fuck that she isn't being placed back in the county jail.

So next time the public is in a hissy fit that cops are getting a special break on their DUI's with $2,000,000.00 bonds and multiple felony charges... Kindly go tell them to go fuck themself!

This little girl needs to be put in JAIL. Fuck the ankle braclet. How many underage drinking offenses do you let a person out on a DUI/Fatal bond go on?

Photo: The Chicago police parking spots reserved for the Lt. and Capt. usually has a nice expensive and big ride in it. I sure hope this CPD boss doesn't get rear ended by Pookie smoking a blunt and drinking a 40 ounce in his Cadillac Escalade. From the www.SecondCityCop.Blogspot.com

Is this for real?
I don't know if you are aware of this or really want to post it, but are you aware that Mike Masters requests a number be generated everytime his name is mentioned on this blog? These numbers are being investigated by a Sgt in IAD confidential who is none too happy about being given the cases. Actor David Carradine Dead at 73
DEVELOPING NEWS STORY:
“Kill Bill” star David Carradine was found dead in a Bangkok hotel room Wednesday, his manager told FOX News Thursday.
Chuck Binder said Carradine, 73, was staying in Bangkok while shooting a movie. The film crew became aware of his absence when they went to dine out at a restaurant yesterday. When a producer went to his room, he discovered that the actor had died.
A statement on behalf of his family has yet to be released, but Binder called the death "shocking and sad."
While Binder gave no indication of the cause of death, several internet reports
Carradine was best known for his role in the television series “Kung Fu.”

Hmmmm Did they do this to O.J.??? Nope! Judge limits Drew Peterson's media interviews and phone calls from jail, sets trial date

JOLIET, Ill. - A judge limited Drew Peterson's ability to give media interviews Wednesday after the jailed ex-police officer phoned in wisecracks to a Chicago radio show last week.
Will County Judge Stephen White ordered Peterson's lawyers to give him a list of family, friends and attorneys that Peterson calls from jail. Peterson must get permission to call somebody not on the list, White said.
White also ordered that all attorneys in the case must notify him and the Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission of any interviews and send copies of press releases.
"If you are going to do an interview, I would like to be informed (beforehand) as to the time and place," White said.
Peterson called the "Mancow & Cassidy" show last week from the Will County Adult Detention Facility and cracked jokes about prison showers, a "Win a Conjugal Visit with Drew" contest and the death of his third wife, Kathleen Savio.
The former Bolingbrook officer has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder in the 2004 death of Savio, whose body was found in a dry bathtub. Peterson is also a suspect in the disappearance of his fourth wife, Stacy.
Since she went missing in October 2007, Peterson and his attorney, Joel Brodsky, have made scores of television and radio appearances and a small army of television trucks is often parked outside Peterson's home. Both he and Savio's family have hired publicists.

The publicity threatens the ability for a fair trial, said Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow, who said he has limited speaking out on the case.
"This is the place to put a cap on it," he said of pretrial publicity. "I'm trying to protect the jury pool here."
Brodsky countered that he needs to be able to talk to the media, saying publicity might prompt potential witnesses to come forward with relevant information.
The judge set an Aug. 24 trial date.
Brodsky, who can ask for a continuance, said it was a realistic date as long as Peterson is in custody.
Glasgow said he expects the defense to move for a change of venue because of the publicity.
Brodsky did not address the change of venue but has said the defense is considering that.____________________________________

Obama tells Muslims "before long all of America will be Muslim, just like me!"

CAIRO -- President Barack Obama, calling for "a new beginning between the United States and Muslims around the world,'' said in a long-promised and widely watched address from Cairo today that the "cycle of suspicion and discord must end.''

Obama acknowledged the mistrust that both the West and Muslim nations hold for one another: The "fear and mistrust'' in the United States stemming from the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, carried out by "violent extremists," and the alienation of Muslim nations bred by "colonialism'' and "sweeping change.''

"Whatever we think of the past,'' the president said to a theater audience frequently applauding his repeated appeals for mutual understanding, "we must not be prisoners to it.''

This American president born of a Muslim father from Kenya and white mother from Kansas and raised for part of his childhood in Indonesia flatly declared that the U.S. is "not at war with Islam.'' The readiness of the U.S. to fulfill its guiding principles, he said, is demonstrated by the fact that "an African American with the name Barack Hussein Obama could be elected president.''

In the morning before the televised address delivered from the campus of Cairo University, the president met with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak at the Quba Palace before touring the Sultan Hassan Mosque in Cairo.

The president walked with his arms crossed over his chest with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton at his side wearing a headscarf, as a woman guided them through the historic building.

The city was on heightened security as the president made his way toward Cairo University for his speech, with soldiers lining the sidewalks and streets closed off to traffic.

After their morning meeting , Mubarak told reporters that he and Obama had discussed "all problems" of the region and that he expects the conversation to be just the first of many.

"We discussed everything candidly and frankly without any reservation," Mubarak said. "But there are other meetings that will take place later either in the United States of America or anywhere else."

For Obama's nearly hour-long speech, the State Department opened telephone lines for callers worldwide to register for free text messages of the speech in Arabic, Persian, Urdu and English. The also were posting the speech in nine other languages.

The president's address, at least among its immediate audience, had an apparent impact on those watching Obama.

"The fact that he talks about tolerance, and cited verses from the Koran and the Bible, makes me feel he is aware how people think," said Michael Fayek, 27, a recent university graduate of Cairo's Ain Shams University, after watching the speech. "I admired very much the suggestion that Jews, Christians and Muslims should live together in peace."

Fayek, who is Christian, said he wants to think more about the "American dogma" that Obama espoused in the speech. But his initial impression is that the president is not "inserting himself" into regional affairs in the same way that his predecessor did. "The one part I was most impressed by," he said, "is that he really supports tolerance."

Obama directly confronted the historical "tension'' that has divided the two worlds, as well as the most recent conflicts.

While condemning the terrorist attacks of 9/11, an "enormous trauma'' for the American people, he also acknowledged that the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq had been "a war of choice,'' and said the U.S. seeks no permanent bases in Iraq or Afghanistan. He pledged to remove all American troops from Iraq by 2012.

His commitment to ban "torture" in the interrogation of detainees and to close the U.S. military-run prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, was applauded. So was his appeal for a lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians - asserting that just as Israel has a right to exist, Palestinians deserve a state of their own.

Just as the death of civilians in the Sept. 11 attacks cannot be justified, Obama said, so is the denial of the Holocaust "baseless, ignorant and hateful." Obama plans to visit the Nazi concentration camp at Buchenwald this week, on his way to commemoration of the 65th anniversary of the allied landing at Normandy.

Threats to annihilate Israel and repetition of hateful stereotypes of Jewish people are "deeply wrong," the president told his audience in Cairo. Yet Obama also emphasized the suffering of Palestinians who have been dislocated from their homes and who suffer the daily humiliations of occupation.

Palestinians must abandon violence, he said, and Israel must stop its settlements in Palestinian territory. Arab states must help Palestinians develop institutions that will sustain their state.

"So let there be no doubt, the situation for the Palestinian people is intolerable," the president said. "America will not turn our backs on the legitimate Palestinian aspiration for dignity, opportunity, and a state of their own."

The presidentdirectly confronted several points of tension between the West and Muslim nations, among them the war in Iraq and the standoff with Iran over nuclear development.

"We meet at a time of tension between the United States and Muslims around the world - tension rooted in historical forces that go beyond any current policy debate,'' Obama said. "The relationship between Islam and the West includes centuries of co-existence and cooperation, but also conflict and religious wars.

"More recently, tension has been fed by colonialism that denied rights and opportunities to many Muslims, and a Cold War in which Muslim-majority countries were too often treated as proxies without regard to their own aspirations,'' he said. "The sweeping change brought by modernity and globalization led many Muslims to view the West as hostile to the traditions of Islam.

"Violent extremists have exploited these tensions in a small but potent minority of Muslims,'' Obama said. "The attacks of September 11th, 2001 and the continued efforts of these extremists to engage in violence against civilians has led some in my country to view Islam as inevitably hostile not only to America and Western countries, but also to human rights. All this has bred more fear and more mistrust.

"So long as our relationship is defined by our differences, we will empower those who sow hatred rather than peace, and who promote conflict rather than the cooperation that can help all of our people achieve justice and prosperity,'' he said. "This cycle of suspicion and discord must end.

"I have come here to Cairo to seek a new beginning between the United States and Muslims around the world, one based on mutual interest and mutual respect and one based upon the truth that America and Islam are not exclusive and need not be in competition,'' the president told a world audience, in an address not only broadcast on television but also disseminated across Websites. "Instead they overlap, and share common principles - principles of justice and progress, tolerance and the dignity of all human beings.''

No one speech will change any of this, the White House has readily acknowledged - with the president pointing out the amount of publicity that has attached to this speech.

"Change cannot happen overnight,'' Obama said. "No single speech can eradicate years of mistrust, nor can I answer in the time that I have all the complex questions that brought us to this point.

The president drew applause from his audience filling an ornate campus auditorium when he said: "As the Holy Koran tells us, "Be conscious of God and speak always the truth."

The president told his own personal tale, including his childhood years in the largest Muslim nation:

"I am a Christian, but my father came from a Kenyan family that includes generations of Muslims. As a boy, I spent several years in Indonesia and heard the call of the azaan at the break of dawn and the fall of dusk.''

He praised the "timeless poetry'' and "cherished music of the Islamic world's cultural traditions. And he saluted a political history that includes the first nation to recognize the establishment of the young United States, Morocco, in 1796. Thomas Jefferson, he said, had kept a Koran in his library, and the first Muslim-American elected to Congress took his oath on that Koran.

The president's address was punctuated with applause as he appealed to both Americans and residents of Muslim nations to seek a mutual respect. "I consider it part of my responsibility as president of the United States to fight against negative stereotypes of Islam wherever they appear,'' he said to applause, and he was cheered as he said: "Just as Muslims do not fit a crude stereotype, America is not the crude stereotype of a self-interested empire.''

It is "a stain on our collective conscience,'' Obama said, when people are killed any place in the world.

"This is a difficult responsibility to embrace,'' he said. "For human history has often been a record of nations and tribes, and yes, religions, subjugating one another to serve their own interests. Yet in this new age, such attitudes are self-defeating.''

While explaining U.S. plans for the drawdown of troops in Iraq and explaining its strategy in Afghanistan, the president also called on both Israel and the Palestinians to meet the commitments needed to secure a lasting peace and two independent nations.

"Israel must take concrete steps to enable such progress,'' he said, and Arab nations must not use the conflict to "distract'' the region from other problems. "America will align our policies with those who pursue peace,'' he said, "and we will say in public what we say in private, to Israelis, Palestinians and Arabs.''

"It is time for us to act on what everyone knows to be true,'' he said. "Too many tears have been shed, too much blood has been shed... All of us must live for the day when the mothers of Israelis and the mothers of Palestinians can see their children grow up in peace.''

He also addressed the "tension'' between the United States and Iran, and a goal of ridding the world of nuclear weapons.

And he addressed a need for greater respect for human rights worldwide. While hailing democracy, he said, "America does not presume to know what is best for everyone.''

"But I do have an unyielding belief that all people yearn for certain things: The ability to speak your mind and have a say in how you are governed, confidence in the rule of law and the equal administration of justice, government that is transparent and doesn't steal from the people; the freedom to live as you choose. Those are not just American ideas, they are human rights, and that is why we will support them everywhere.''

"The issues that I have described will not be easy to address,'' Obama said. "But we have a responsibility to join together on behalf of the world we seek - a world where extremists no longer threaten our people, and American troops have come home, a world where Israelis and Palestinians are each secure in a state of their own, and nuclear energy is used for peaceful purposes, a world where governments serve their citizens, and the rights of all God's children are respected.

"Those are mutual interests,'' the president said. "That is the world we seek. But we can only achieve it together. '

Man found not guilty by insanity in attacks on TV anchor, others

WLS-Channel 7 anchor Cheryl Burton initially thought she was shot.
Then she checked for missing teeth after a man randomly punched her on State Street last year.

“I thought I had been shot so I started feeling my body for blood or some liquid,” Burton testified today at the trial of her accused attacker — Gregory Perdue, 28, of Berwyn.

Burton, who slightly bit her tongue when she fell, never saw Perdue but remembers the severe blow that caused her to slide across the pavement as she strolled on her dinner break near Washington and State on April 23, 2008. The Channel 7 studios are nearby at State and Lake.

“I hit my head on the pavement so I started searching for my teeth because I wasn’t sure what happened,” said Burton, a victim of a carjacking more than a decade ago.

Although an X-Ray and CAT scans didn’t reveal any serious damage, Burton said she suffered headaches for months after the attack.

“I just had very bad headaches and I had soreness. I was swollen,” she said.

After Burton’s testimony — and that of several other victims — Cook County Judge Clayton J. Crane found Perdue not guilty by reason of insanity on aggravated battery charges. He was accused of striking the television personality and five others in the fist-throwing rampage. The bench trial began and ended today.

Perdue is schizophrenic and had been institutionalized, according to his attorney, John Benson. At the time of the incident, he was reported missing by his family and living in a downtown alley, Benson said.

Assistant State’s Attorney Clarissa Palermo argued that Perdue knew exactly what he was doing when he hit the victims, including senior citizens, as he snaked through the sidewalks. As evidence, Palermo pointed to the fact that Perdue was sane enough to graduate from the University of Illinois in Chicago several years ago.

“He committed these crimes because he was angry and because he had issues with elderly people,” said Palermo, who noted one victims needed plastic surgery.

Gun matches bullet that killed Chicago cop, officials say

Weapon was found in defendant's car, and 2 men are charged
A bullet recovered from the body of slain Chicago Police Officer Alejandro "Alex" Valadez was fired from a gun found in a car linked to one of two men charged with murder of a peace officer, authorities said Wednesday.

At a bond hearing, Cook County prosecutors outlined their case against Shawn Gaston, 20, and Kevin Walker, 21, who also are charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder because a man was next to Valadez during the shooting. Criminal Court Judge Maria Kuriakos Ciesil ordered the two -- both on probation for earlier offenses -- held without bail.

Assistant State's Atty. John Dillon said in court that moments before the fatal shooting early Monday, Gaston and Walker, both admitted members of the Gangster Disciples, had been shot at by rival Black Disciples. The two returned to the area after getting a gun, he said.

In the meantime, Valadez, 27, and his partner had gone to the 6000 block of South Hermitage Avenue to investigate a report of gunshots about 12:10 a.m. Valadez was questioning a man who had been walking down the street when Walker, driving north on Hermitage, slowed while Gaston opened fire on the two, Dillon said.

Valadez was struck in the head and thigh, while the other man was not injured.

Dillon said witnesses identified the car to other officers, who found it nearby and discovered a spent shell lodged under the lip of the trunk lid near the rear window. After obtaining a warrant, police searched the car -- a blue 2007 Pontiac G6 sedan registered to Gaston's mother -- and found a .40-caliber handgun, a .357-caliber handgun and a 9 mm carbine rifle in the trunk, he said.

Authorities said ballistic tests showed the bullet and shell casings were shot from the .40-caliber gun, and gunshot residue was detected on Gaston's hand.

Dillon said both suspects gave videotaped statements admitting their roles in the year's first killing of a Chicago police officer.

But it is unclear if the two knew that Valadez, in plainclothes but wearing his police star and a bullet-resistant vest, was a police officer.

At a news conference after the hearing, Police Supt. Jody Weis said he found it unlikely the suspects would not have recognized Valadez was an officer.

Walker's older brother, Terrance, said he suspects his brother and Gaston were coerced into confessing. He said his sister went to the police station with a lawyer but was denied access.

"I'm from the street," said the brother, 26. "If somebody puts the right amount of pressure on you, you'll say whatever they want you to say. What I'm saying is why wasn't he offered a lawyer?"

Weis praised the man who was being questioned by Valadez at the time of the shooting for staying at the scene and cooperating.

The superintendent said Valadez's partner is struggling to deal with the loss.

"He's very traumatized and that's going to stick with him for the rest of his life," he said.

Weis said he was confident in the evidence against Walker and Gaston but said investigators will continue to determine whether anyone else was involved.

I hope that by the time this goes to trial that the case will be such a "lock" that the defendants just plea guilty and saves the family from the ordeal of a trial!
