Mayor Daley - imposes even more days off without pay on city workers - "I need to cut the budget so there is enough to steal" Mayor Daley

City to impose more unpaid days off
Mayor Richard Daley announced new cost-cutting measures today, saying he does not see the "glimmer of hope" for economic recovery that President Barack Obama recently described.
Non-union city workers will be forced to take as many as 14 more unpaid days off. With the City Council's approval, the mayor's plan would mean seven furlough days and no pay on as many as seven holidays this year, Daley said.
Daley said City Hall also intends to shut down on the day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, as it did last year for the first time.
Those moves will save about $10 million, officials said. But the city could face a deficit of as great as $300 million by the end of the year.

Charges filed in double hit-run fatality - Appears to be another illegal alien lettuce picker and office cleaner - Carlos Hernandez Garcia

Charges were filed today against a man police say is responsible for the hit and run accident that killed two people in West Rogers Park earlier this week.
Carlos Hernandez Garcia, 19, of the 6300 block of North Maplewood Avenue was charged with two counts of leaving the scene of a fatal accident, a felony, said Chicago Police spokeswoman Laura Kubiak.
Hernandez Garcia is the brother of the registered owner of the red Honda Civic that police said was involved in the crash Monday evening. He lives at the same address as the owner, police said.

The Honda Civic was speeding south on Western Avenue about 10:35 p.m. Monday when it struck and killed Yahko Oshana, 52, and Christy Cawthon, 34, as they were walking east across Western at Devon Avenue. Police later found that car abandoned nearby.
Another brother of the car's owner told the Tribune Tuesday that the car had been stolen while he and his brother worked at their nighttime office-cleaning jobs near Arlington Heights.
Hernandez Garcia turned himself in Tuesday at the Albany Park District police station. He is expected to appear in bond court Friday.
Oshana, who owned an Assyrian social club and coffee shop, was dead on the scene. Cawthon was pronounced dead at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston.

I love how the newspaper failed to mention what this offender was actually charged with and what his bond is.

The newspapers sure dug deep when an off duty cop was involved in a double fatal vehicle accident. But when the offender is just an asshat who will probably just make bond and go back to Mexico... why should the newspapers care....

Police suspect shots meant for Cook County Board Member Tony Peraica's home

Riverside Police are investigating whether shots fired at a home in Riverside were actually intended for the house next door -- where Cook County Commissioner Tony Peraica lives.

"Mr. Peraica's position as a commissioner and as an attorney still representing clients leads us to believe he was the intended target," Riverside Police Chief Thomas Weitzel said.

Peraica said he was worried about his family and his neighbors.

"It's a very quiet residential street, and my neighbors are up in arms and very concerned obviously, as I am and my family," Peraica said. "It's not an area that's known for that type of activity."

The Riverside Police Department got calls about shots fired on Peraica's block at about 3:05 a.m. Wednesday, according to Weitzel.

Officers recovered seven small-caliber rounds -- either .22-caliber or .25-caliber -- from the home next to Peraica's, Weitzel said. Two of the bullets were lodged in the front door of the home, another had bounced off the door and fell in front of it and four others had gone through a front window and fell near the base of the window, Weitzel said.

Peraica said he was "awakened by popping sounds, didn't know what they were, got up out of my bed and looked out the window, dark street, nobody there, and looked around, couldn't hear anything and went back to sleep. Thought maybe it was a tree noise or some kids in the forest preserve. I didn't know what happened.

"About 8:30 last night, a Riverside Police detective came over to our house and informed me that they received calls from the neighbors about shots fired," he added.

Police did not find any shell casings outside the home, leading them to believe the shooter may have been in a vehicle, Weitzel said.

Police are looking into whether Peraica was the intended target because of his high profile as a commissioner and because he is a practicing lawyer. Weitzel said the owners of the home that was hit do not have jobs that would put them at risk. He said the area is very secluded.

Asked if he had received threats, Peraica said he had not. "My law office was burglarized last year leading up to the state's attorney general election in November of '08 on four separate occasions. . . . Stole just one computer, and I believe that this is kind of an intimidation pattern that seems to continue."

Peraica said the people who live in the home that was hit are "two school teachers who are wonderful people and have a 10-year-old daughter. There's no reason they can imagine or fathom why anyone would shoot at their house."

Peraica and Weitzel both said they reported the incident to the Cook County sheriff's police.

Sheriff Tom Dart, asked if it appeared Peraica was the target, said: "It's still early right now, but it is very suspicious. We're looking at it. We're working with the local police department on it."

Dart told the Tribune that there was no reason to suspect Peraica's neighbors were targeted. Because Peraica "is somebody that is in government and works on controversial issues at times," Dart said police suspect he may have been the target.

Illinois Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias threatens to pull state money from Wells Fargo if Hartmax factory (Pres. Obama's suit maker) is shut down
The Chicago-based manufacturer, which makes suits for President Barack Obama, is in talks to be sold soon.
The fight to keep the Hartmax Corp. suit factory in Des Plaines alive stepped up Thursday when the state treasurer threatened to pull Illinois' business from Wells Fargo & Co. if the bank backs a bid that could lead to liquidating the company.

"Unless the company remains open, they will not be doing business with the state of Illinois any longer," Illinois Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias told a crowd of workers outside the factory, who gathered on their lunch break.

The Chicago-based manufacturer, which makes suits for President Barack Obama, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy Jan. 23 and is in talks to be sold soon. The Des Plaines factory, opened in 1982, employs 600 workers making men's suit coats. Hartmarx also has a union factory in Rock Island where it employs 300 workers.

Backdropped by signs saying "Wells Fargo gets bailed out workers get sold out," union leaders said they worry that a new owner would close the factory and liquidate the company or send production overseas. They say the bank has an obligation to protect jobs in light of the $25 billion it received in federal TARP bailout money.

"Wells Fargo has to understand that they take a short-term approach they're creating the same problem that got us into this mess," said Tom Balanoff, president Service Employees International Union state council.

Giannouliaus said he sent a letter to Wells Fargo's president and CEO John Stumpf warning that the relationship with the state in "serious jeopardy."

Wells Fargo is the custodian for the $8 billion Illinois state portfolio, according to Scott Burnham, spokesman for the Illinois Treasurer's office.

A Wells Fargo spokesman wasn't immediately available for comment.

Gunman fatally wounded by police after 4 people are shot, including an elderly woman.
Officers shot and killed a gunman after he opened fire in a convenience store in the South Shore neighborhood, then fled and pointed his weapon at pursuing police, Chicago police said.

The gunman wounded four people, two men in the store and a woman and a teenage boy outside, police said. The incident occurred about 7 p.m. when Grand Crossing District officers saw an "armed offender" running from the 2100 block of East 71st Street, said Asst. Deputy Supt. Ernest Brown.

"The officers gave chase and at some point he confronted the officers with a firearm, and shots were fired by police and the subject is now deceased," Brown said.

101 year old former Alderman and refused to be a rubber stamp for old man Daley - passes away....

Leon Despres, 1908-2009: Chicago alderman challenged elder Mayor Daley
Liberal voice of city, 101, also championed civil rights and political reforms
Over his 101 years, Leon Despres took artist Frida Kahlo to the movies, drove the first Mayor Daley to distraction, and fought a long and often lonely crusade for civil rights and political reform that saw African-Americans gain entry to the mayor's office and the White House.

Despres, a former Chicago alderman, died of heart failure Wednesday in his Hyde Park apartment, said Kenan Heise, who collaborated with Despres on his 2005 memoir.

Despres and his South Side neighborhood, which he represented in the City Council from 1955 to 1975, were long the city's liberal conscience, and both were part of President Barack Obama's original political base.

"Michelle and I were saddened by the passing of our dear friend and a towering giant in Chicago history, Leon M. Despres," Obama said in a statement. "With an incisive mind, rapier wit and unstinting courage, he waged legendary battles against the corruption and discrimination that blighted our city."

During his 20 years on the City Council, he lost many more battles than he won against Richard J. Daley and the Democratic machine. When the mayor lost patience with the 5th Ward alderman, he simply turned off Despres' microphone, said William Singer, a North Side independent alderman in the 1970s.

Yet the city has moved closer to much of what Despres fought for -- fair elections and an end to patronage and segregation. Singer said younger Chicagoans may not realize how much the best of the city today reflects Despres' legacy.

"For those of us who followed him to the City Council, he taught us that it was important for us to raise the issues even if we were sure to lose," said Singer, who also ran for mayor against Richard J. Daley.

Mayor Richard M. Daley on Wednesday had only praise for his father's longtime antagonist.

"He was a major participant in the debate on every major issue Chicago has faced in the last half century, and his strong voice made a great contribution to the way our city has evolved in that time," Daley said in a statement.

Ald. Joe Moore (49th), one of the few aldermen to frequently oppose the present Mayor Daley, called Despres "a role model and mentor to me."

"There was a period of time when he was the only voice of independence in the Chicago City Council," Moore said. "He was courageous."

Despres was born on Chicago's South Side on Feb. 2, 1908, and moved as a toddler to Hyde Park. His predecessors as 5th Ward alderman included Paul Douglas, later a U.S. senator.

Despres' father, who was in the clothing business, died when he was a boy, and his mother took him to Italy and France for high school.

He was a product of the University of Chicago, with which he had a love-hate relationship. He credited it with his intellectual grounding but fought it on open housing issues.

In 1931, he married Marian Alschuler, daughter of a prominent architect. She was every bit her husband's intellectual equal, and they were fixtures of the city's cultural life for more than 70 years.

A socialist in his youth, Despres was dispatched by fellow leftists to bring a suitcase of clothing to Leon Trotsky, the deposed Bolshevik leader who had taken refuge in Mexico. While there, Despres' wife had her portrait painted by famed muralist Diego Rivera, Kahlo's husband. During sittings, Despres escorted Kahlo to the movies.

"That's my claim to fame," Despres once said. "I took Frida Kahlo to the movies."

Rivera's portrait hung among a vibrant collection of modernist works that made the Despres' Hyde Park apartment a virtual museum.

Despres and his wife were "committed to the arts, not only in the old fogey sense but to the avant garde," said his law partner since 1979, Thomas Geoghegan.

Despres went into law practice in 1929 and started representing labor unions during the Depression.

In 1937, after police killed 10 demonstrators at a Memorial Day march against Republic Steel, Despres organized a protest rally that helped turn the affair into a seminal event of American labor history.

He used his legal acumen for a wide range of causes.

In 1948, Despres represented the ACLU in arranging for a local showing of "The Respectful Prostitute," a play by Jean-Paul Sartre that had been banned by Chicago police as "immoral."

He learned early how tough it was to be a reformer in Chicago. In one of his earliest political forays, he backed a candidate against longtime 25th Ward Ald. Vito Marzullo. Despres' candidate carried just one precinct.

"Vito never forgave me for that," Despres later said.

But in 1955, he was elected alderman of the 5th Ward, and he won re-election despite the machine's best efforts until voluntarily stepping down 20 years later.

As an alderman, he fought restrictive covenants, a legal device to keep blacks out of traditionally white areas -- like Hyde Park.

Because black aldermen were often loyal to Daley and silent on civil rights, some publications dubbed Despres "the only Negro on the City Council," said Dick Simpson, a former independent alderman.

"He typically spoke out for those without a voice," Simpson said. "The fact that his microphone was turned off only amplified his voice."

Legislation by Despres was often defeated, only to be passed later with Daley's imprimatur, its origins ignored. For example, Despres' campaign against lead-based paint went nowhere until Daley loyalists put their names on it, Singer said.

He was liberal to the core. In 1967, he was attacked by two men and shot twice in the leg while walking home from his office, but he refused to condemn his assailants, saying that crime was a product of social conditions.

Endorsing Singer's mayoral run against Daley in 1975, he declared: "The machine does not love Chicago. It loves to feed on Chicago. It is Chicago's tapeworm."

Despres remained involved in civic affairs, serving on the city's Plan Commission and as City Council parliamentarian under Harold Washington, whose upstart candidacy in 1983 he supported vigorously.

For years, he swam for a half-mile before work in the winter and in summer was a fixture around town on his bicycle.

His long life touched many chapters of Chicago's history. Heise once walked with Despres through Oak Woods Cemetery and saw Enrico Fermi's tombstone. "I did his will for him," Despres said. Olympian Jesse Owens is also buried there. "He worked on my first campaign," Despres recalled.

"Despres was an icon in the best sense of the word," said Dr. Quentin Young, a Hyde Park activist and Despres' physician for years.

Marian Despres died in January 2007. Her loss was a deep blow, but Despres kept busy. He practiced law until a couple of years ago, and at 100 wrote an online diary for Slate.

"Chicago is a richer and stronger city for having known Leon Despres -- and a lesser place now that he is gone," Obama said.

Survivors include a son, Robert; a daughter, Linda Baskin; and a grandson.

Services will be held 1 p.m. May 31 at KAM Isaiah Israel, 1100 E. Hyde Park Blvd.

UPDATE ON POLICE SHOOTING - Suspect in 30 robberies killed on Northwest Side

Police on the scene of the shooting of a robbery suspect at a gas station just inside Harwood Heights. (Tribune/Antonio Perez)

A suspect in as many as 30 armed robberies was shot and killed by police at a Marathon gas station in Harwood Heights this morning as Chicago officers and FBI agents tried to catch him in the act, authorities said.

A Chicago police detective and an FBI agent were staking out the gas station because it matched a pattern of targets robbed over the last two months in the city and in the north and northwest suburbs. The detective shot and killed the gun-toting man as he came out of the station that he had just hit, said Chicago Police Chief of Detectives Tom Byrne.

The shooting took place a little before 7 a.m. outside the gas station at Montrose Avenue and Forest Preserve Drive, on Chicago's border with Harwood Heights.

Although authorities originally had thought the robber might be working with a getaway driver and searched the area for a second suspect, that search was called off about 9 a.m., Byrne said.

USA's first face transplant patient shows face

WOW - From the above to the below! She looks like a new woman! Well a new woman with a face the size of Chevy pick-up truck bumper!

CLEVELAND – Five years ago, a shotgun blast left a ghastly hole where the middle of her face had been. Five months ago, she received a new face from a dead woman. Connie Culp stepped forward Tuesday to show off the results of the nation's first face transplant, and her new look was a far cry from the puckered, noseless sight that made children run away in horror.

Culp's expressions are still a bit wooden, but she can talk, smile, smell and taste her food again. Her speech is at times a little tough to understand. Her face is bloated and squarish, and her skin droops in big folds that doctors plan to pare away as her circulation improves and her nerves grow, animating her new muscles.

But Culp had nothing but praise for those who made her new face possible.

"I guess I'm the one you came to see today," the 46-year-old Ohio woman said at a news conference at the Cleveland Clinic, where the groundbreaking operation was performed. But "I think it's more important that you focus on the donor family that made it so I could have this person's face."

Up until Tuesday, Culp's identity and how she came to be disfigured were a secret.

Culp's husband, Thomas, shot her in 2004, then turned the gun on himself. He went to prison for seven years. His wife was left clinging to life. The blast shattered her nose, cheeks, the roof of her mouth and an eye. Hundreds of fragments of shotgun pellet and bone splinters were embedded in her face. She needed a tube into her windpipe to breathe. Only her upper eyelids, forehead, lower lip and chin were left.

A plastic surgeon at the Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Risal Djohan, got a look at her injuries two months later. "He told me he didn't think, he wasn't sure, if he could fix me, but he'd try," Culp recalled.

She endured 30 operations to try to fix her face. Doctors took parts of her ribs to make cheekbones and fashioned an upper jaw from one of her leg bones. She had countless skin grafts from her thighs. Still, she was left unable to eat solid food, breathe on her own, or smell.

Then, on Dec. 10, in a 22-hour operation, Dr. Maria Siemionow led a team of doctors who replaced 80 percent of Culp's face with bone, muscles, nerves, skin and blood vessels from another woman who had just died. It was the fourth face transplant in the world, though the others were not as extensive.

"Here I am, five years later. He did what he said — I got me my nose," Culp said of Djohan, laughing.

In January, she was able to eat pizza, chicken and hamburgers for the first time in years. She loves to have cookies with a cup of coffee, Siemionow said.

No information has been released about the donor or how she died, but her family members were moved when they saw before-and-after pictures of Culp, Siemionow said.

Culp said she wants to help foster acceptance of those who have suffered burns and other disfiguring injuries.

"When somebody has a disfigurement and don't look as pretty as you do, don't judge them, because you never know what happened to them," she said. "Don't judge people who don't look the same as you do. Because you never know. One day it might be all taken away."

It's a role she has already practiced, said clinic psychiatrist Dr. Kathy Coffman.

Once while shopping, "she heard a little kid say, `You said there were no real monsters mommy, and there's one right there,'" Coffman said. Culp stopped and said, "I'm not a monster. I'm a person who was shot," and pulled out her driver's license to show the child what she used to look like, the psychiatrist said.

Culp, who is from the small town of Unionport, near the Pennsylvania line, told her doctors she just wants to blend back into society. She has a son and a daughter who live near her, and two preschooler grandsons. Before she was shot, she and her husband ran a painting and contracting business, and she did everything from hanging drywall to a little plumbing, Coffman said.

Culp left the hospital Feb. 5 and has returned for periodic follow-up care. She has suffered only one mild rejection episode that was controlled with a single dose of steroid medicines, her doctors said. She must take immune-suppressing drugs for the rest of her life, but her dosage has been greatly reduced and she needs only a few pills a day.

Also at the Cleveland Clinic is Charla Nash of Stamford, Conn., who was attacked by a friend's chimpanzee in February. She lost her hands, nose, lips and eyelids, and will be blind, doctors said. Clinic officials said it is premature to discuss the possibility of a face transplant for her.

In April, doctors at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston performed the nation's second face transplant, on a man disfigured in a freak accident. It was the world's seventh such operation. The first, in 2005, was performed in France on Isabelle Dinoire, a woman who had been mauled by her dog.

Police Officer Stripped & Suspended For Domestic Battery

Cop suspended amid domestic battery chargeA veteran Algonquin police sergeant accused of domestic battery was suspended from the police force without pay today, the Daily Herald reports.
Sgt. Wade A. Merritt, 46, is accused of slapping the victim in the head -- specifically the area around the left ear -- hard enough to knock her to the floor during an argument Monday inside his Crystal Lake home.
Following his arrest, the department put Merritt on paid leave and confiscated his firearm. Information on Merritt's salary was not available this evening.
A three-member police commission upheld Police Chief Russ Laine's recommendation this afternoon that Merritt be placed on unpaid suspension.

Another Chicago professional sports team.... Dying a slow death

Chicago Blackhawks lose 3-1
Vancouver Canucks take 2-1 series edge with victory

Having seized home-ice advantage by splitting the first two games of their Western Conference Stanley Cup playoff semifinal in Vancouver, the Blackhawks were counting on the ear-splitting support of their home crowd to help them take control of the series as it resumed at the United Center on Tuesday night.

But crowd noise wasn't enough, constant as it was during a desperate third period in which the Hawks were constantly on the attack, trying to cut into a two-goal deficit.

They couldn't get it done, and the Canucks held on for a 3-1 victory and a 2-1 series lead, with Game 4 set for the same venue on Thursday night.

Mason Raymond's goal in the first period gave Vancouver a lead it never relinquished, and Steve Bernier and Henrik Sedin scored in the second.

Brian Campbell scored the Blackhawks' lone goal, also in the second.

The Hawks had a 24-21 advantage in shots on goal, but most of the action was in their end in the first two periods as Vancouver appeared to be the sharper, faster team.

The second period opened with the Canucks on the power play, Patrick Kane having gone off for hooking late in the first. They needed just a minute to score when Bernier poked a rebound of Henrik Sedin's slap shot past Nikolai Khabibulin for a 2-0 lead at 1:00.

The lead grew to 3-0 roughly seven minutes later during a four-on-four that featured some of the most wide open skating of the series. The Sedin brothers got loose in front of Khabibulin, and Henrik's rebound of Daniel's shot trickled through the goaltender's pads and across the line at 8:40.

But sizable deficits have been nothing new for the Hawks in this series, and they responded on the power play with Campbell's blast that slipped past Roberto Luongo as Dustin Byfuglien screened him at 11:09.

Raymond opened the scoring at 15:34 of the first, after Vancouver survived a Hawks power play. Kevin Bieksa pried the puck away from Ben Eager in the Hawks' end and slipped it to Ryan Kessler, who found Raymond wide open to Khabibulin's right. Raymond ripped a shot that found the net over Khabibulin's left shoulder for a 1-0 Vancouver lead.

The hitting was heavy at both ends through both periods.

The United Center had been hockey-less since April 25, when a three-goal first period staked the Hawks to a 5-1 victory over Calgary in Game 5 of their first-round series. They finished off the Flames in Calgary two nights later and moved on to face the Canucks, who had advanced with a first-round sweep of the St. Louis Blues.

The red-clad crowd was ready to its part, at its seats and clearly revved up long before Jim Cornelison's exuberant rendition of the national anthems. From the ovation that greeted Hawks legend Bobby Hull, it seemed he was going to skate a few shifts rather than drop the ceremonial first puck.

In Vancouver, the Hawks sort of shrugged off the old adage about not fixing something that ain't broke. After relying on their younger, fresher legs to skate rings around the plodding Flames, they have adopted a more physical approach to dealing with the Canucks, sending big-bodied Byfuglien and others directly at Luongo in an effort to harass and unsettle the man acknowledged to be the world's best goaltender.

Byfuglien has been a constant and distracting presence on Luongo's doorstep, and try as they might the Canucks have been unable to dislodge him.

There's no arguing with the results from the Hawks' vantage point -- they scored nine goals in the two games at Vancouver, eight of them on Luongo's watch.

The Canucks, mindful of the fact that Luongo is their meal ticket, took exception to those tactics and were a chippy bunch in Game 2, penalized 14 times for 52 minutes, including three misconducts.

The Hawks, as they had done against the cranky, irritable Flames, stood their ground and retaliated only when necessary, drawing 13 penalties worth 50 minutes. Traditional non-combatants such as Havlat and Jonathan Toews found themselves being belabored as the final seconds ticked away, suggesting the Canucks intended to keep up the rough stuff, with more minutes for tough guy Bieksa as the series shifted cities.

Sure enough, Bieksa instigated some vigorous after-the-whistle jostling with Andrew Ladd and Havlat on successive first-period shifts, but no punches were thrown and no penalties called.

Coach Joel Quenneville insisted the Hawks would not be distracted or goaded into anything silly. He said they would remain focused on the task at hand, concentrate on each game as it came up and continue to see where this improbable season takes them.

Now they may have to alter that approach and play with a little more desperation.

State trooper arrested

RALEIGH (WTVD) -- A North Carolina state trooper faces drug charges in Wake County.
William Wheeler, 35, of Cary, was arrested Tuesday on prescription fraud allegations.
According to warrants filed with the court, Wheeler doctor shopped to get prescriptions for medications containing Codeine
One warrant says Wheeler went to one doctor and got a prescription, but didn't tell the doctor he would be seeing his primary care physician in seven days.
A second warrant says Wheeler filled a prescription at a CVS pharmacy, and then called his doctor to say the pharmacy was out of the medication and asked for a prescription to be called into a second pharmacy.
Wheeler is a first sergeant at the training academy on Garner Road in Raleigh. He's been with the department since 1998.
A Highway Patrol spokesman says Wheeler was already on leave pending an internal investigation of the same allegations. Once the Patrol completes its internal investigation, it will be up to the agency's commander to decide Wheeler's job status. The Patrol spokesman says the filing of criminal charges by the State Bureau of Investigation could add aggravating factors to the Patrol's own investigation.
Wheeler was booked at the Wake County Magistrate's Office and released on a written promise to appear in court Wednesday morning.

Woman guilty in Lesbian Love Affair Murder - Nicole Abusharif

DuPage County, IL - The guilty verdict delivered Tuesday against Nicole Abusharif in the 2007 suffocation slaying of longtime lover Rebecca Klein brought a measure of relief to Klein’s still grieving family, her father said.

“Almost 25 months ago, our family was struck by a tragedy that will continue to impact us for the rest of our lives,” said her dad, Jeff Klein. “Although we are not happy to be here in this position today, we are relieved that this part of the process has concluded.”

A DuPage County jury deliberated for nearly 11 hours over two days before finding Abusharif, 28, guilty of smothering Rebecca Klein with a plastic garbage bag at their Villa Park home.

Abusharif sat stoically in the Wheaton courtroom as she was convicted of first-degree murder, though some of her family members and friends wiped away tears — as did Rebecca Klein’s mother and sister.

Abusharif killed RebeccaKlein, 32, on March 15, 2007 so she could pursue a relationship with another woman, whom she had been seeing without Klein’s knowledge, prosecutors Joseph Ruggiero and Tim Diamond argue. She also stood to gain at least $250,000 in life insurance proceeds from Klein’s death.

Klein wasn’t discovered until two days later when her body was found stuffed in the trunk of Abusharif's prized 1966 Ford Mustang, which was parked in their garage. Klein’s hands had been bound with duct tape, while the plastic bag wrapped around her head was secured with the tape as well, authorities said.

Speaking outside the courthouse after the verdict, Jeff Klein and his wife, Marilyn, said they are comforted by their memories of their daughter, who had worked with disabled adults and maintained a close relationship with her family.

“Becky will continue to be part of our lives, and her memory will flourish in our hearts and souls,” her father said.

Investigators matched to Abusharif a fingerprint on the tape and other prints found on the plastic bag used to smother Klein.

“The physical evidence was very compelling,” said jury foreman Don Keplinger, who declined to comment further on the case.

The verdict by the six-man, six-woman jury means Abusharif faces up to 60 years in prison when she is sentenced later this year. She could have been sentenced to life behind bars if jurors had determined the killing occurred in a “premeditated manner.”

Testifying in her own defense, Abusharif insisted she played no role in the death of her longtime lover.

This sends the signal that Todd Stroger has lost his political power base - Daley taking over

Cook County Board repeals Strogers 1% increase in sales tax. Stroger gets bill repealing tax. Will he sign it?

The Cook County Board today took what may end up being a symbolic vote to repeal last year's controversial sales tax increase, a move President Todd Stroger labeled "political theater," Clout Street reports.

The board, on a 12-3 vote, sent Stroger a measure that would repeal the 1-percentage-point tax increase on Jan. 1 next year.

But Stroger, who vehemently opposed the vote, can veto the measure. Then the county board would have to decide to override his veto for the tax to be repealed.

Stroger and some of the board members said the tax increase was needed to keep county services running, but many commissioners said they were tired of the pressure they've been under since they passed the highly unpopular tax last year.

Detective Shavedlongcock:

The big player in this move was the Mayor's brother, John Daley. John Daley is a Cook County Board Member. Daley pushed this repeal through to force Stroger to either veto the repeal or to force Stroger to accept it and look like he was defeated.

This is the big power play coming up. John Daley is working with his brother Mayor Daley to dump Todd Stroger (Who is not a team player with Daley) and to put a new Cook County President in. Mayor Daley knows it would look bad for his bother John to control the county as he controls Chicago - so either two things may happen. The Daleys will back Paul Vallas for Cook County Board President or Mayor Daley will not run again, most likely place Tom Dart up for Mayor and then John Daley can take over the County by becoming the Cook County Board President.

I think I found the next Mrs. SLC - Country club owner, Anna Mae "Babe" Ahern, 101 yrs. old, awarded $25M

Country club owner, 101, awarded $25M
A Cook County jury today awarded $25 million to the owner of the Evergreen Park Country Club in a judgment against the village of Evergreen Park.
The decision in favor of Anna Mae "Babe" Ahern came on the seventh day of an eminent domain trial in which the village was attempting to seize her 95-acre golf course at 93rd Street and South Western Avenue.
Jim Figliulo, Ahern's attorney, said the jury award was "just compensation" for the village's blocking a $25 million sale of the property to Home Depot in 1999 by denying the company rezoning of the land for the project.
A few years later, the village launched eminent domain proceedings against Aherns to attempt to seize the property for its own uses, Figliulo said.
Attempts to reach an attorney for the village were unsuccessful Tuesday night.
Ahern, 101, one of the village's largest land owners, has run the nine-hole golf course since the 1920s.

But joking aside, God bless her. It appears every level of government is out of control. The money grabbing elected officials at Evergreen Park thought they could "steal" her golf course from her. Then have insiders make millions off dividing it up. And it isn't just Evergreen Park... across the country government agencies and elected officials are just doing what they want without any repercussions!

A 25 Million Dollar Hit is a big hit for a village the size of Evergreen Park. I hope every elected official involved in this rip off fail to be re-elected when they run again!

Tampa Man Arrested for Allegedly Throwing Ex-Girlfriend's Baby Boy From CarHillsborough County Sheriff's Office - Richard McTear Jr.

I hope they McTear him a new asshole in the county jail!

A man was caught in Tampa Tuesday for allegedly throwing his ex-girlfriend's 4-month-old baby out of a car window, killing the child.

Richard Anthony McTear Jr., 21, was arrested Tuesday morning, hours after police say he tossed the infant boy onto Interstate 275, according to Hillsborough County authorities.

Police say he got into a fight with the baby's 17-year-old mother and attacked both of them.

He then fled with the child in his blue Chevrolet Impala.

The baby, Emanuel Wesley Murray, was found dead near the interstate about 4 a.m. just as police were preparing to issue an Amber Alert, FOX affiliate WTVT reported.

The tragedy occurred after police responded to a domestic violence call in the Mirabella Apartments in Tampa about 3:15 a.m. Tuesday, the station said.

The teenage mother told deputies her boyfriend beat her, threw her infant son down on the concrete and then fled with the baby, according to WTVT.

Arrest records show McTear has a lengthy criminal history that includes several battery and assault charges, including domestic battery by strangulation and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

He is a fugitive on a 2008 felony battery charge in Hillsborough County, according to the Florida Department of Corrections Web site.

“The Cannonball Run,” “Blazing Saddles” and “Spaceballs,” and now he is dead at 75

Actor Dom DeLuise died last night in a Los Angeles hospital, Jeffrey Lane, an agent for Burt Reynolds confirmed to FOX News Tuesday.

The actor, famous for his roles in “The Cannonball Run,” “Blazing Saddles” and “Spaceballs,” passed away in his sleep at around 6 p.m.

He was 75 years old.

Reynolds expressed sadness at the news of his friend passing, telling FOX News in an email " I was thinking about this the other day. As you get older, and start to lose people you love, you think about it more, and I was dreading this moment. Dom always made you feel better when he was around and there will never be another like him. I never heard him say an unkind word about anyone. I will miss him very much."

DeLuise was born in Brooklyn in 1933 to John and Vincenza DeLuise. He graduated from the Manhattan School of the Performing Arts before breaking into the off-Broadway circuit in the 1960s.

He later established a solid comedic career, appearing on several variey shows like "The Garry Moore show" and "The Entertainers."
He made his film debut in the Sidney Lumet drama "Fail-Safe" in 1964, though he is best known for his roles as film director Buddy Bizarre in "Blazing Saddles" and the all-star variety project "The Cannonball Run," in which he starred with Reynolds.

In addition to his film, television and theater work, he also established himself as a celebrity chef, writing several cookbooks as well as children's books in the 1990s.

Because of his passion for food, the actor battled obesity throughout much of his life, his weight reaching as much as 325 pounds at one point. For years, he resisted the efforts of family members and doctors who tried to put him on various diets. He finally agreed in 1993 when he needed hip replacement surgery and his doctor refused to perform it until he lost 100 pounds.

He and his family enrolled at the Duke University Diet and Fitness Center in Durham, N.C., and DeLuise lost enough weight for the surgery, although he gained some of it back afterward.

On the positive side, his love of food resulted in two successful cookbooks, 1988's "Eat This — It Will Make You Feel Better!" and 1997's "Eat This Too! It'll Also Make You Feel Good."

At his Pacific Palisades home, DeLuise often prepared feasts for family and friends. One lunch began with turkey soup and ended with strawberry shortcake. In between, were platters of beef filet, chicken breast and sausage, a bowl of spaghetti and meatballs and a saucer of lettuce.

He strongly resembled the famed chef Paul Prudhomme and joked in a 1987 Associated Press interview that he had posed as Prudhomme while visiting his New Orleans restaurant, K-Paul's Louisiana Kitchen.

In 2006, he suffered a brief health scare when he collapsed in his home. His health records were also subject to public scrutiny, after they were involved in a very public story about hospital staff snooping through the confidential files of celebrity patients.

He is survived by his wife Carol, three sons Peter, Michael and Dave, and three grandchildren

Calif. AG accuses police department near LA of abusing authority in searches, use of force

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A small police force that patrols two gritty cities near Los Angeles routinely beat up suspects and arrested innocent people, the state attorney general alleged Tuesday in a scathing report.

The report calls the 45-officer Maywood Police Department sexist, racist and discourteous and says among other abuses, officers used a Taser on a handcuffed man and his father and beat another suspect in the face after arresting him for throwing a bottle at them.

Several officers have been placed on administrative leave, California Attorney General Jerry Brown said, and one officer was charged with 17 felony counts stemming from the sexual assaults of three women.

The department "was a mess," Brown said at a news conference. "When you have rogue cops, it's just intolerable in a free society."

Maywood Police Chief Frank Hauptmann said at a new conference that the department has implemented tougher policies on officers' misconduct. Those accused of misconduct were not allowed to remain on duty, he said.

"Simply because an allegation or accusation is made does not necessarily mean that it, in fact, happened," Hauptmann said.

Brown said he would seek a court order requiring Maywood police to make reforms outlined in the report. The department has tried to remedy its shortcomings and the use of excessive force has subsided, he said.

But "the underlying structural and cultural causes of many of the deficiencies ... have not been remedied," the report states. "The attempt to reform the department is in its infancy."

Maywood is a city of at least 30,000 residents about seven miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles. Its police department also provides law enforcement for nearby Cudahy.

The report says the department was an "agency of last resort" for officers who couldn't make the grade at other agencies. There is only one woman on the force. Uniforms are still emblazoned with the outdated title, "Policeman."

The report said officers seeking trips to Las Vegas and other perks from Maywood Club Tow impounded 17,773 vehicles in Maywood and Cudahy between 2002 and 2007.

Many of the drivers were undocumented immigrants without licenses.(Illegal Alien Lettuce Pickers and couldn't get a drivers license)
Drivers were charged at least $1,200 to get back their vehicles, and the cities earned at least $200 per impounded car.

"This revenue appears to have been the primary motivation for impounding such an extraordinary number of vehicles," the report states.

Attorney Fariba Rahimi, a spokeswoman for Maywood Club Tow, denied any wrongdoing and said the allegations were politically motivated.

2 killed in West Rogers Park hit-and-run
Two pedestrians were killed Monday night by a hit-and-run vehicle in the West Rogers Park neighborhood, Chicago police said this morning, citing preliminary information.
The crash happened about 10:35 p.m. in the 6400 block of North Western Avenue, said Police Officer David Banks.
One of the dead pedestrians was identified as Yakho Oshana, in his 50s, of the 6700 block of North California Avenue, his brother, Adams Oshana, said on the scene. Banks said the other victim, believed to be in her 30s, was pronounced dead at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston.
A spokesman for the Cook County medical examiner's office had no information about the fatalities.

4 men shot in Englewood, cops say
Four men were shot early this morning on the South Side, according to Chicago police.
Two of the victims were taken to Stroger Hospital, according to a police news release. A 22-year-old man was in critical condition with a gunshot in the head and a 25-year-old man was in serious condition with a gunshot in the back, police said.
The other two victims, both 18-year-olds, were taken to St. Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center with gunshot wounds in the buttocks, according to police.
The shooting happened about 12:30 a.m. near West 59th Street and South Normal Avenue in the Englewood neighborhood.
Police said shell casings from a "heavy-duty"-type weapon were found on the scene, but they could not confirm whether an assault weapon was used in the shooting.
The gunman exited through a gangway, fired, and fled through that gangway, according to police.
Wentworth Area detectives continued to investigate the shooting this morning. No one was in custody.

DUI charges pending in fatal Maywood crash
A Maywood man was killed this morning in a crash near his home that likely will result in DUI charges for the driver of their vehicle, police said.
The driver, a 31-year-old man from Hillside, was heading north in a 1995 Infinity at a high rate of speed in the 100 block of South 17th Avenue in Maywood about 6:10 a.m. when the vehicle slammed into a fire hydrant, then hit a light post and finally a tree, police said.
A passenger in the vehicle, Eimen Cannon, 27, of the 0-99 block of 17th Avenue died at the scene, police said.
The driver, who was taken to Loyola University Hospital in Maywood with unspecified injuries, faces pending charges of driving while intoxicated and possibly of driving without insurance or a valid driver's license, police said.
The driver is expected to appear Wednesday for a bond hearing, police said.

Cops: Ind. teen female flees, causes fatal crash
A teenage girl fleeing a traffic stop in Michigan City, Ind. this morning slammed into a minivan in an intersection, killing the 78-year-old driver of the other vehicle, police said.
The crash occurred shortly after an 11 a.m. traffic stop in the 900 block of Woodland Avenue in the northwest Indiana city, about 60 miles southeast of Chicago.
The unidentified girl, who police said was from Michigan City, was stopped in a 1994 Volvo and, at one point, when an officer returned to his squad car to write a ticket for a traffic violation, the girl sped off, according to an Indiana State Police news release.
The officer pursued the girl, with lights and sirens activated, until deciding to end the pursuit because of heavy traffic on westbound Michigan Boulevard (U.S. Highway 35).
The girl continued westbound and ran a red light at Michigan Boulevard and Vail Street where she hit the minivan, driven by Frank Wojcik.
Wojcik was turning on a green light and was broadsided by the Volvo, state police said. He was taken to Saint Anthony's Hospital in Michigan City and pronounced dead.
A responding Indiana state police squad car was also hit by the Volvo after the collision's impact, but the officer was treated for injuries and released from Saint Anthony's Hospital.
The girl suffered a broken arm in the crash and was being treated at that hospital. Police said charges were pending.

Todd Stroger's busboy turned $60,000.00 a yr Cook County employee - involved in a jailhouse fight

Former Cook County worker gets in jail fight

A former Cook County employee at the center of a patronage controversy involving county Board President Todd Stroger has been separated from other Cook County Jail inmates following a fight.
Tony Cole, a former steakhouse busboy who was given a $60,000 county job despite his criminal background, allegedly began fighting Saturday night with an inmate at the jail on drug charges.
"An officer saw them fighting and ordered them to stop and they did," said Steve Patterson, a spokesman for Sheriff Tom Dart, who runs the jail.
The other inmate told authorities he was on the telephone when Cole came up from behind and hit him for no reason, Patterson said, but Cole said he was on the phone and turned around and the other inmate hit him.
The other inmate was uninjured, while Cole had minor scrapes and redness to his right hand and knee, Patterson said. The other inmate declined to press charges, but Cole told staff he wanted charges filed against him.
Cole was twice bailed out of jail by Deborah Dunnings, Stroger's cousin and the county's former chief financial officer. Cole, who is currently in jail for violating his bond in a domestic violence case, has been segregated from the jail's general population since the fight.

Oops, Pirates Rush French Military Ship

(May 4) - The French Navy said they seized 11 pirates Sunday after they apparently mistook a French military vessel for a commercial ship and made a run at it off the coast of Kenya.
Two pirate assault boats approached the Nivose "at great speed," Capt. Christophe Prazuck said, but a French helicopter intervened before the attackers had time to fire at the French navy ship.
The helicopter fired warning shots, he said.
The pirates, who had a mother ship as well as the two assault boats, are being held for questioning on the Nivose, Prazuck said. The vessels were carrying AK-47 rifles and rocket-propelled grenades, but the pirates did not fire, he said.
The incident took place about 1,000 km (620 miles) east of Mombasa, Kenya, at 8:30 a.m. local time (0430 GMT) he added.
In the past three weeks, the Nivose has intercepted 24 suspected pirates as part of a European Union anti-piracy operation off the coast of Somalia, which has become a piracy hotspot.
Over the past year, more than 100 suspected pirates have been picked up, Prazuck said. Of that total, 27 have been released, and more than 70 taken to jail in France, handed to authorities in Somalia or taken to Kenya under an EU agreement with the government in Nairobi.
The Nivose seized three other suspected pirates Thursday morning, the French military spokesman said, but released them the next day for lack of evidence.

Teen cop impersonator charged with stealing car

A teenager who made headlines for impersonating a Chicago Police officer has been charged with possession of a stolen vehicle after he allegedly cut-off a high-ranking member of the Chicago Police Department who was on patrol Friday night, the Chicago Sun-Times has learned. The 15-year-old was arrested by Deputy Supt. Daniel Dugan and other responding officers.

A teenager arrested earlier this year for impersonating a Chicago police officer allegedly led police on a chase in a stolen car before crashing it Friday, police said.

The 15-year-old was charged with possession of a stolen motor vehicle and ordered held in custody today by a juvenile court judge and has a May 28 court date, said Tandra Simonton, a spokeswoman for the Cook County State's Attorney's office.

In February the teen was ordered released on electronic monitoring by a juvenile court judge. Authorities believe he was still was still wearing a monitoring bracelet when was arrested again.

The boy, who the Tribune is not naming because he is a juvenile, led two officers, including Deputy Supt. of Patrol Daniel Dugan, on the chase after he cut off Dugan and another officer who were leaving a roll call at a South Side police district, police said.

Authorities said the boy allegedly took the 1990 black Lexus four-door sedan off the lot of a car dealer in the 7200 block of South Western Avenue. The boy wore a suit and tie to the dealer and asked to test drive the car, police said. When the boy and the salesman attempted to start the car they found the battery was dead and the dealer jumped it. When the salesman went to return the battery charger inside the building the teen drove off with the car, police said.

The boy, who was driving the car without license plates, cut off Dugan and the other officer near 95th and State Street. The men were driving in an unmarked police car. When Dugan and the other officer attempted to pull the car over the teen drove into a nearby McDonald's parking lot and crashed into a light pole, police said.

After the crash, the teen allegedly jumped out of the car and attempted to run away. The teen grabbed a stroller and began walking with it, trying to blend in with a nearby crowd of people, police said.

Dugan, following the teen on foot, attempted to grab the teen, who by then had let go of the stroller. He struggled and broke free, police said.

The other officer who was in the car with Dugan followed on foot and arrested the boy. Police said that it wasn't until they had the teen in custody later Friday that they realized he was the same person who embarrassed the department when he was arrested in January for impersonating one of their own.

At that time, the boy reported for duty to the Grand Crossing District station, 7040 S. Cottage Grove Ave., dressed in a Chicago police uniform and partnered with another police officer for about five hours.

The boy identified himself as an officer from another district who was detailed for the day to Grand Crossing and also was savvy enough to sign out a police radio and a ticket book, police said.

Uncle - "The killer(s) aren't human" - Autopsy: Beaten, burned teen was shot to death

Chicago, IL - Alex Arellano's family was so concerned about threats the 15-year-old was getting from gang members that they pulled him from Chicago Discovery Academy in the fall.

But they didn't know how serious the situation was until his uncle got a chilling call on Friday from a friend of the teenager's, saying that he was being chased and beaten with bats in a neighborhood several miles from their home.

"He was knocked down by bats, and after he got up he started to run but was struck by a car that was chasing him," said his uncle, Juan Tirado, who went Friday night to the area near 53rd Street and Sacramento where the caller said Arellano was last seen, but could find no sign of him.

The teen's severely beaten and burned body wasn't found until about 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the 3000 block of West 54th Place, a few blocks from where Tirado had been directed, police said.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's office said Arellano died of a gunshot wound to the head and ruled it a homicide, but would not say if the teen was dead before his body was burned. No one had been arrested by this evening.
The grieving family spent Sunday struggling to understand why a teen who police say had no criminal record or ties to gangs was targeted for such a brutal death.

"Cowards," Tirado said as he stood on the back porch of the family's apartment in the 8900 block of South Escanaba Avenue, where Alex lived with his mother, Yeimi Tirado, a 12-year-old sister and a 5-year-old stepbrother.

Tirado lashed out at his nephew's unknown killers.

"You guys are not human," he said. "A human would not do that to another human being -- especially a child, who had no gang affiliation."

He also pleaded with anyone who saw his nephew being chased on Friday about 7 p.m., when he received the call from Arellano's friend, to contact police.

"I know it's hard for people around there to say anything," Tirado said. "But if someone saw something, call the police anonymously and say something. It was just so vicious and horrifying of them to do this to a child."

Arellano last attended Chicago Discovery Academy on Sept. 9, Chicago Public Schools spokeswoman Monique Bond said. School administrators do not recall the teen or his family reporting a problem with threats, Bond said.

"If any student feels threatened, there is a system in place to address that," Bond said. "You could go to anybody. A teacher. The principal."

Tirado said the family hoped to move to another neighborhood so that Arellano could attend another school, but financial problems made that difficult. They felt the best way to deal with the problem was just to keep Arellano at home. The teen has a learning disability, Tirado said, and spent much of his time playing video games since leaving school.

Neighbors who asked not to be identified described him as a quiet kid who did not make trouble or seem to be involved with gangs.

"He's a very shy kid," said Tirado's girlfriend, Juanita Quiroz. "He was funny. He didn't want to get in anybody's business. He liked to laugh."

The last time family members had seen Arellano was Thursday night. They realized Friday morning he was gone, and did not know where he was until a girl who Tirado did not know called about 7 p.m. Friday.

At first, she said Arellano needed to be picked up from 51st Street and Albany. She called a few minutes later with the description of the chase, saying police were on the scene.

On Friday night, Tirado said he and other family members asked police to help search for the teen, but were told to go home and call police in their own neighborhood to fill out a missing person's report. An officer arrived at about midnight and took the report, Tirado said.

On Saturday morning, family members were back in the neighborhood where Arellano was last seen, handing out fliers with the teen's picture. A family member saw police gathered near where the body was found at 2:30 p.m., and helped identify Arellano, Tirado said.

Tirado has no idea why his nephew was in the neighborhood where his body was found or why anyone would kill him.

"I think it was probably a set-up situation," he said. "To get him out of this area."

Detective Shavedlongcock:

The ironic part of the uncle's statement of, "The killer(s) aren't human", is that 5 Philadelphia police officers were just recently fired for calling such killers and criminals "animals" as reported on Det. Shavedlongcock.

The uncle of this victim is 100% correct, there is something fundamentally wrong with people who go out on a daily basis and do drive by shootings, shootings, murders and other violent crimes as a way of life.

A person or persons didn't just kill another here, they beat a young man, shot a young man and then burned the body. When I was in my young teenage years, we would burn some molded army soldiers and some plastic model cars for kicks but to do what the killer(s) did to this guy, well it's time to start using the death penalty again. Because nothing is going to rehabilitate these killer(s).

The DIVA of the Year - Coroner: Driver painting nails kills biker

Chicago, IL - A motorcyclist was killed Saturday night when a driver, distracted while painting her fingernails, slammed into her at a traffic light near northwest suburban Lake Zurich, authorities said today.

Anita Zaffke, of the 1500 block of Eddy Lane in Lake Zurich, stopped at a yellow light around 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Route 12 and Old McHenry Road, but the Chevrolet Impala behind her did not, said Lake County Coroner Richard Keller.

Zaffke, who was wearing a helmet, was thrown about 200 feet from her bike, according to Keller, who added that she died from chest and abdominal injuries about an hour later at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington.

Lake County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Scott Morrison said the Impala's driver was cited with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and could face additional charges. He did not have her name.

Keller said the driver told authorities she was painting her fingernails before the impact. Morrison said he could not comment on that aspect of the ongoing investigation.

"It appears to be a tragic accident and it appears she did nothing wrong," Morrison said, referring to Zaffke. "She was just in the wrong place at the wrong time and she could not have done anything to avoid it."

"Lake County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Scott Morrison said the Impala's driver was cited with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident"

They have to be joking? She is painting her fingernails while driving her car, kills a female motorcyclist and all she gets is a TICKET? I am sorry but this driver needs to be charged with vehicular homicide. There are a few things one can do that will minimally distract the driver from driving. Painting your nails is not one of them!

I know there is a 1000 jokes for this headline - Pregnant Cougar Escapes in Florida - Police hunt for cougar!

OR

POINCIANA, Fla. — Wildlife officials are looking for a pregnant cougar that escaped into the woods in central Florida while being transferred to a cage.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says the cougar escaped Saturday while being prepared for a trip to the veterinarian for a cesarean section.

Jungle Adventures in Christmas has a permit to own the cougar.

Officials say the cougar was born in captivity and is named Sierra. The cat's front paws are declawed and it's wearing a collar.

Sierra isn't known to be vicious, but anyone seeing the cougar is urged to call the Wildlife Alert Hotline at 1-888-404-3922.

Although Florida is known for its share of rich older Cougars, few are usually pregnant. So if anybody is planning a little vacation to Florida soon, keep me informed on the Cougars you saw.

Police Rescue Alleged Burglar From Rooftop

SYDNEY — Emergency services mounted a three-hour operation involving a helicopter and a fire truck Sunday to retrieve a man who got stuck on the roof of a factory in Sydney that he was allegedly trying to rob, police said.

New South Wales state police said they were called early Sunday to the joinery factory where the 53-year-old man was stuck on the roof, apparently unable to move because of the wet weather and steep angle.

Numerous rescue attempts were made, and emergency crews eventually used a fire truck with a tall ladder to retrieve the man while a helicopter illuminated the rooftop.

Police said they arrested the man and charged him with trespassing, possession of housebreaking implements and attempted breaking-and-entering.

He was carrying a helmet with a light, bolt cutters, a small ladder, backpack, tarpaulin, ropes and harnesses, they said.

I would say at 53 years old, one should not be doing rooftop commercial burglaries. Maybe 1st floor open door burglaries.

Daley praises retiring Banks, mum on successor - Daley was also mum on all the zoning changing bribes and kickbacks too

Yes Mr. Kenny Brother's Construction Co. Owner, I will get this "envelope" right over to Alderman Banks!

Mayor Richard Daley today praised retiring Ald. William J.P. Banks (36th) as "one of the great experts of zoning" in Chicago.

Banks is the City Council's powerful Zoning Committee chairman who told colleagues and aides last week he plans to step down. He turns 60 in July.

Daley joined the testimonials at an unrelated event today.

"Alderman Banks has been an outstanding public servant. He is one of the great experts of zoning," the mayor said.

Daley said Banks, who has been zoning chairman for 20 years, is more knowledgable about zoning issue than other city officials, including staff, and oversaw huge zoning changes during his tenure as chairman.

"He has done a tremendous public service," Daley said.

Banks has asked Daley privately to appoint his assistant and driver, John Rice, as his successor.

When asked if he plans to appoint Rice as the new 36th Ward alderman, Daley demurred.

"I don't know yet," he said. "He [Banks] hasn't officially resigned yet."

Banks has overseen the powerful committee during one of the city's greatest construction booms in decades. The volume of zoning changes spiked the past 10 years, with the committee often approving scores of real estate plans each month.

The Tribune’s award-winning “Neighborhoods for Sale” series, which last year analyzed those zoning changes, revealed how the committee frequently allowed new construction projects that are far larger than the buildings they replaced and are out-of-scale with neighboring structures. In recent years, about 40 percent of the time zoning changes were made over the objections of city planners, the Tribune found.

Banks has been a staunch defender of the unwritten policy known as “aldermanic privilege,” which gives council members final say over development projects in their wards.

In an interview published last year, Banks said he sees nothing wrong with the common practice of developers, architects and zoning lawyers contributing to the campaigns of aldermen who approve zoning changes for their real estate projects.

During Banks’ long tenure as the council’s zoning czar, the zoning lawyer with the most cases before the committee was his nephew James Banks. He works in the law firm of the zoning chairman's brother, Samuel V.P. Banks. William Banks always steps out of the meeting room, handing the chairman’s gavel to another committee member, when his nephew appears to argue for zoning changes for his clients.

Banks also is the chairman of the 36th Ward Democratic organization, among the few party ward groups that retained influence in City Hall hiring and promotions since Daley became mayor.

Two city zoning inspectors with ties to Banks’ 36th Ward organization were charged last year by federal prosecutors who alleged bribery in the Daley administration’s Buildings and Zoning Departments.

AP: Former NFL player, politician Jack Kemp dies

Jack Kemp, the ex-quarterback, congressman, one-time vice-presidential nominee and self-described "bleeding-heart conservative," died Saturday.

His spokeswoman Bona Park and longtime friend and former campaign adviser Edwin J. Feulner confirmed that Kemp died after a lengthy illness.

Kemp had announced in January 2009 that he had been diagnosed with cancer. He said he was undergoing tests but gave no other details.

Kemp, a former quarterback for the Buffalo Bills, represented western New York for nine terms in Congress, leaving the House for an unsuccessful presidential bid in 1988.

Eight years later, after serving a term as President George H.W. Bush's housing secretary, he made it onto the national Republican ticket as Bob Dole's running-mate.

Don't expect Pres. Obama to give the passing of Jack Kemp much fanfare. Obama will be saving all the condolences and praises for when Sen. Ted Kennedy kicks the bucket. Because Jack Kemp never drown a woman in his car, Jack Kemp's father wasn't a bootlegger and Jack Kemp wasn't the most liberal congressman in D.C.

Basically none of the great qualities that makes Ted Kennedy great!

GODSPEED to a good man and a good retired congressman.
